General elections were held in Liberia on 10 October 2023 to elect the President, House of Representatives and half the Senate.[1][2] Incumbent George Weah was eligible for a second term.[3] Due to both major candidates not receiving a majority in the first round, a runoff will be held on 7 November 2023.[4][5][6]
Electoral system[edit]
The President is elected using the two-round system,[7] while the 73 members of the House of Representatives are elected by first-past-the-post voting in single-member constituencies.[8]
Candidates[edit]
Sara Beysolow Nyanti, is an international development and humanitarian expert. She is also a Liberian pastor. She has 25 years of professional experience and recently retired from the United Nations at the level of Assistant Secretary General. Her last assignment with the UN was as Deputy Representative of the Secrectary General to South Sudan. She is currently running for President of Liberia as the Standard Bearer of the African Liberation League in Liberia's 2023 elections.
In January 2022, Nathaniel Barnes, a former Liberian ambassador to the United States (2008–2010), announced his intention to run for the presidency as an independent candidate.[9]
Clarence Moniba, the leader of the Liberia National Union, announced on 20 January 2023 that he would run for the presidency.[10]
Joseph Boakai, Former Vice President of Liberia (2006–2018) and candidate for president in 2017, had announced that he will run for the presidency again in the elections.[11]
Alexander B. Cummings Jr., who finished fifth in the 2017 presidential election, and is former chief administrative officer of Coca-Cola (2008–2016), announced he would run for president again as the Alternative National Congress candidate with Charlyne Brumskine as his running mate.[12]
George Weah, incumbent president of Liberia, had announced he would run for a second term in 2023.[13]
