Instructions for nominators[edit]

If this is your first nomination, please read the DYK rules before continuing. Further information can be found at the supplementary guidelines.

Frequently asked questions[edit]

How do I write an interesting hook?

Successful hooks tend to have several traits. Most importantly, they share a surprising or intriguing fact. They give readers enough context to understand the hook, but leave enough out to make them want to learn more. They are written for a general audience who has no prior knowledge of or interest in the topic area. Lastly, they are concise, and do not attempt to cover multiple facts or present information about the subject beyond what's needed to understand the hook.

When will my nomination be reviewed?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first, it may take several weeks until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions below).

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to this nominations page, it may have been approved and is on the approved nominations page waiting to be promoted. It could also have been added to one of the prep areas, promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for reviewers[edit]

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article to which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For a more detailed discussion of the DYK rules and review process see the supplementary guidelines and the WP:Did you know/Reviewing guide.

To post a comment or review on a DYK nomination, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Look through this page, Template talk:Did you know, to find a nomination you would like to comment on.
  • Click the "Review or comment" link at the top of the nomination. You will be taken to the nomination subpage.
  • The top of the page includes a list of the DYK criteria. Check the article to ensure it meets all the relevant criteria.
  • To indicate the result of the review (i.e., whether the nomination passes, fails, or needs some minor changes), leave a signed comment on the page. Please begin with one of the 5 review symbols that appear at the top of the edit screen, and then indicate all aspects of the article that you have reviewed; your comment should look something like the following:

Article length and age are fine, no copyvio or plagiarism concerns, reliable sources are used. But the hook needs to be shortened.

If you are the first person to comment on the nomination, there will be a line :* <!-- REPLACE THIS LINE TO WRITE FIRST COMMENT, KEEPING  :* --> showing you where you should put the comment.
  • Save the page.
  • After the nomination is approved, a bot will automatically list the nomination page on Template talk:Did you know/Approved.

If there is any problem or concern about a nomination, please consider notifying the nominator by placing on the nominator's talk page.

Advanced procedures[edit]

How to promote an accepted hook[edit]

At-a-glance instructions on how to promote an approved hook to a prep area
Check list for nomination review completeness
  1. Select a hook from the approved nominations page that has one of these ticks at the bottom post: .
  2. Check to make sure basic review requirements were completed.
    • Any outstanding issue following needs to be addressed before promoting.
  3. Check the article history for any substantive changes since it was nominated or reviewed.
  4. Images for the lead slot must be freely licensed. Fair-use images are not permitted. Images loaded on Commons that appear on the Main Page are automatically protected by KrinkleBot.
  5. Hook must be stated in both the article and source (which must be cited at the end of the article sentence where stated).
  6. Hook should make sense grammatically.
  7. Try to vary subject matters within each prep area.
  8. Try to select a funny, quirky or otherwise upbeat hook for the last or bottom hook in the set.
Steps to add a hook to prep
  • In one tab, open the nomination page of the hook you want to promote.
  • In a second tab, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.

Wanna skip all this fuss? Install WP:PSHAW instead! Does most of the heavy lifting for ya :)

  1. For hooks held for specific dates, refer to "Local update times" section on DYK Queue.
    • Completed Prep area number sets will be promoted by an administrator to corresponding Queue number.
  2. Copy and paste the hook into a chosen slot.
    • Make sure there's a space between ... and that, and a ? at the end.
    • Check that there's a bold link to the article.
  3. If it's the lead (first) hook, paste the image where indicated at the top of the template.
  4. Copy and paste ALL the credit information (the DYKmake and DYKnom templates) at the bottom
  5. Check your work in the prep's Preview mode.
    • At the bottom under "Credits", to the right of each article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; if not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake.
  6. Save the Prep page.
Closing the DYK nomination page
  1. At the upper left
    • Change , at the top or bottom.
  4. Save.

For more information, please see T:TDYK#How to promote an accepted hook.

  • To Prep 5
  • To Prep 6

How to remove a rejected hook[edit]

  • Open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to remove. (It's best to wait several days after a reviewer has rejected the hook, just in case someone contests or the article undergoes a large change.)
  • In the window where the DYK nomination subpage is open, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage, and replace |passed= with |passed=no. Then save the page. This has the effect of wrapping up the discussion on the DYK nomination subpage in a blue archive box and stating that the nomination was unsuccessful, as well as adding the nomination to a category for archival purposes.

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue[edit]

  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to this page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from this page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

How to move a nomination subpage to a new name[edit]

  • Don't; it should not ever be necessary, and will break some links which will later need to be repaired. Even if you change the title of the article, you don't need to move the nomination page.

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

Hook eligibility:

QPQ: Done.

Overall: His being official at the same time is sourced to a primary source database. As it's an exceptional claim that he'd be in a conflict of interest position, it should have a secondary source, vetted by an author, which confirms that he was an official and coach in the same league at the same time. —Bagumba (talk) 11:42, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I've always found Pro Football Archives a reliable and accurate source, but if you need a non-database reference I'll need awhile to find it (I may contact them to see which games he officiated and if that doesn't work, I may have to go digging through all the game recaps of the season - but I had planned on doing that anyway in a month or two for another project). Is that alright, @Bagumba:? BeanieFan11 (talk) 17:02, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm ok to wait (I'll leave it to others if there are DYK restrictions on the length of that wait).—Bagumba (talk) 18:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@BeanieFan11: What's the status of your search? Is this ready for a re-review? Z1720 (talk) 14:44, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Z1720 and Bagumba: OK, so I haven't had much time to do the research, but I contacted PFA and they gave me a list of every game they were able to verify he officiated. There were no games from 1922, so I don't see why list him as having officiated during that year, but I still think a few other good ALT hooks could be developed by changing the wording. E.g. "... that after having been an official for Columbus Panhandles NFL games, Herb Dell served as their head coach?" Thoughts? BeanieFan11 (talk) 03:02, 2 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bagumba: Does this satisfy your concerns? Z1720 (talk) 19:44, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not sure if Bagumba is coming back, so this will need a new reviewer. If Bagumba comes back they can resume where they left off. Z1720 (talk) 15:42, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@BeanieFan11: Go ahead and make a formal hook proposal. I might suggest using officiated for "been an official for". The fact that the Columbus owner was also his friend might be interesting to somehow squeeze in, if possible.—Bagumba (talk) 07:13, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bagumba: ALTs:
ALT2 ... that after having been an official for Columbus Panhandles NFL games, Herb Dell served as their head coach?
ALT3 ... that Herb Dell officiated NFL games for a team coached by his friend?
ALT4 ... that Herb Dell officiated NFL games for a team coached by his friend and also served as their head coach himself for a time?
ALT5 ... that after having officiated games for the Columbus Panhandles NFL team, Herb Dell served as their head coach?
Mainly different wording styles - open to any other ideas. Of the hooks, I think I like ALT4 best. BeanieFan11 (talk) 20:06, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BeanieFan11: Modifying ALT5's end to something like "...Herb Dell was hired by his friend, team owner Joseph Carr, to be their head coach?" would add the question of nepotism (making an official a coach) to the hook, while still maintaining whether there was conflict of interest that he was previously allowed to officiate their games. Similarly, ALT4 can also be tweaked to "for a team coachedowned by his friend".—Bagumba (talk) 21:45, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hanscotte centre-rail system

Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Hanscotte centre-rail system; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.Reply[reply]

  • Comment: This is my first DYK application—QPQ doesn't apply.
  • The article is long enough and new enough. I assume good faith on the references that I can't access. Everything is reliably referenced. A QPQ isn't needed. SL93 (talk) 19:31, 20 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @AntientNestor and SL93: I have looked at this article many times wanting to promote it, but I get stuck trying to verify that the fact cited in the hook is in the article. If you want this to run on the main page, I really think the fact cited in the hook needs to be made more explicit and clearer in the article itself. Remember, by putting it on the main page, you're now asking a broader audience to read the article, and it should be reasonably straightforward for readers to verify that the claim made in the hook is actually in the article. (Also SL93: What about the references you can access? What is your assessment of possible copyright violations or close paraphrasing?) Cielquiparle (talk) 21:16, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Google has the text of the pages used as a reference here. These are cited in the article. Thanks for taking an interest.--AntientNestor (talk) 21:30, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @SL93: If all the concerns have been addressed, can you add a green tick and reapprove this? Z1720 (talk) 16:58, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Also pinging Cielquiparle, who is the one who actually detailed the concerns that was preventing them from promoting the nomination. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:35, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@AntientNestor: Unfortunately I still cannot make sense of the claim made in the hook. Where in the article does it say that Hanscotte developed the centre-rail system specifically for safe braking of heavy trains on steep gradients? Perhaps it is implied, but it shouldn't take a technical expert to derive this if we're stating it in a DYK hook on the main page. Cielquiparle (talk) 20:49, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

It was the inventor who wanted to use the equipment for better traction and better braking, but the company employing him pursued development only with regard to better braking. The inventor had to go to another company to see his idea put into practice for traction. I don't know how to condense this into a hook.--AntientNestor (talk) 21:18, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
QPQ: None required.

Overall: I found three pictures for the article and stuck them in where I thought they'd best fit, but I am not set on them in their current locations, or even on having all of them, feel free to move around or even remove some. Also, not knowing much about the band, I couldn't caption them in more detail - who is who - which might be useful for readers. Perhaps you may be able to caption the band members. GRuban (talk) 13:06, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Pinktoebeans, CasualInterestInManyThings, and GRuban: Andy Price's departure and his replacement by Conor Marshall (as mentioned in the Members section) is not cited. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 22:41, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Good point, I missed that. I searched a bit, and couldn't find the exact date, but I did find this statement from the band on Twitter:
https://twitter.com/ConjurerUK/status/1032204735426818048 "Conor came into the band just after we recorded Mire and Andy left 5:56 AM · Aug 22, 2018"
Better than nothing? --GRuban (talk) 13:19, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Aha! Got it. https://www.therockpit.net/2017/conjurer-announce-debut-album-mire-and-release-new-video/ is announcing the completion of Mire, and is dated November 25, 2017. So Mire was already made by then (though scheduled for release in 2018). In fact, I am reasonably sure the picture of Conjurer that is accompanying the article already includes Conor Marshall (I'm reasonably sure he's the long haired skinny guy). On the other end, here's http://thesludgelord.blogspot.com/2017/01/band-profile-crushing-noisecore-crew.html?m=1 which is an article by Andy Price himself, dated Friday, 20 January 2017, and includes "... ; that has never left me and is still very much part of the sound that I bring to Conjurer." So the combination of the three links is good for narrowing down the date to 2017. Whew - that was non-trivial research, for a topic (metal music) that I know very little about! You get a DYK review from me, you get the full package! --GRuban (talk) 13:37, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
AirshipJungleman29, does this address your concerns? If so, can you please supersede your ? icon with a tick? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:38, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New reviewer needed, although I hope @AirshipJungleman29: Returns to approve this hook. Z1720 (talk) 14:44, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • New enough and long enough, no eligibility issues, no QPQ needed. I'm unsure about the hooks, though. "RUC" as an abbreviation is definitely not clear to a broad audience, though the contrast between the history of the force and the cosmopolitan complexity of Heaney could be spun into something interesting. Opening this one up to discussion -- there's a hook here, but I don't think either of these are there yet. Vaticidalprophet 08:14, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • How about something to the effect of: Did you know that the Seamus Heaney HomePlace is built on the site of a former police barracks used during the Troubles which featured heavily in the late poet's poems? 123Writer talk 19:20, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • I think that's a suitable ALT2, which I'll just format properly here (with a minor copyedit) so the promotion script can see it properly...
      • Approving ALT2 only. There might be a slightly smoother wording, but that can be worked out in prep. Vaticidalprophet 14:34, 6 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
        • @1TWO3Writer and Vaticidalprophet: Agree that ALT2 is a compelling hook...but now you need to make sure that the fact cited in the hook is clearly explained within the article itself. (I'm not seeing any explicit discussion of the Troubles in Heaney's poetry, although I do see that the police barracks are mentioned.) Cielquiparle (talk) 21:46, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
          • Vaticidalprophet, 123Writer's most recent Wikipedia edit, on 20 September, indicated that they had to step away from the site for a while. Can you address the hook issue noted by Cielquiparle? This has been sitting for four weeks, and the nomination won't be kept open indefinitely. Thank you. (Note: I have struck the original hook and ALT1, since you didn't approve them.) BlueMoonset (talk) 15:23, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
            • I have no topic knowledge here and am not sure how I missed that the hook wasn't properly in the article. Absolutely no clue what to do here, sorry. I'll take a look and get back to you. Actually, do we need the "that was an influence on his poems" part? That seems to be the only problematic part here, and I think the hook works okay as the statement of what it was built on. Vaticidalprophet 15:27, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • The hook is quite hard to understand. It's not really a hook but more of a rephrasing of the article's first line. The article also has just over 1000 characters, which is below the 1500-character minimum for DYK. If the article can be expanded further then the review can continue but if not I'm afraid the nomination will have to be failed due to ineligibility. The new hook is not suitable at all, not just because it's also not very hooky (see WP:Did you know/Guidelines for more information, but also because the article is still (barely) under 1500 characters. I should also point out that there's a big "orphan" tag on the article that needs to be resolved. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:20, 23 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please note that all text in the table is does not count as prose per DYK guidelines. There's no point in finding someone to do a full review as suggested above until the article is long enough. • Interesting: Green tickY
QPQ: Done.

Overall: An inline citation is needed at the end of the first paragraph in the Career section. On the fence about whether "In a fateful decision" is encyclopedic language. I don't see in the article where it supports "shortly". Ergo Sum 21:42, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Ergo Sum, thanks for the review. (1) Re: the first paragraph in the career section, the paragraph is meant to be a mini-lede/summary of what to come. Anyway, I've added a couple of citations as asked. (2) Removed "In a fateful decision" with "At any rate". (3) Re: "shortly", I've rewritten the sentence. According to the chronicle, Hanthawaddy troops charged forward, blocked the gate doors from closing, and captured the fort. No additional fighting was reported. Please review again. Thanks. Hybernator (talk) 01:53, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • The end of the first paragraph still needs an inline citation. You can take the citation inside the explanatory footnote and reproduce it at the end of the sentence, then also use it as an inline citation at the end of the sentence inside the footnote. Indeed, all four of the explanatory footnotes lack inline citations at the ends of them. Also, the article does not clearly state that the battle came to an end with the subject's death. Ergo Sum 03:16, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Ergo Sum, I've added two additional separate inline citations in the paragraph. The additional citations are those already mentioned in the associated note. As for the citations in the notes, those already have citations. Yo seem to be looking for superscripted citations in the notes themselves. For some reason, I can't nest citations within the notes. Anyway, I'm not sure why we need nested citations. I've used this format in successful GA norms as well as dozens of DYKs. No one has ever raised the issue.
  • As for the battle ending after his death, I've provided the citation that says Hanthawaddy troops got inside the fort after his death, and captured the fort. What I'm missing? Hybernator (talk) 23:15, 1 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Parenthetical referencing has been deprecated since 2020. Thus, the citation format used in the article would not pass GA muster, and certainly not FA. However, because DYK requires only basic compliance with WP's core rules and parenthetical referencing is deprecated but not banned, I think it suffices for DYK purposes. For future reference, you can use the Source Editor to insert a superscripted inline citation within an explanatory footnote.
  • One problem remains. There is still no inline citation at the end of the first paragraph in the "Early life" section. The explanatory footnote on its own is not adequate. The Efn begins with a parenthetical reference, but the way it is worded, it appears to support only the footnote itself. You must insert a duplicate citation at the end of the sentence to clearly support the half sibling statement, besides putting it in the footnote. That is part of WP's core citation policy. Once that is done, this hook can pass. Ergo Sum 15:26, 4 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
* Ergo Sum, thanks for letting me know about the "Efn". I've rewritten the notes using Efn. Hopefully, it passes muster this time. Thanks. Hybernator (talk) 23:11, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't think this article is acceptable in its current form. There's far too much puffery (e.g. repeatedly describing agile as "modern") or pure jargon (e.g. they would just do the tanker whiteboard). Then there's a section titled "AgileAF" with the sentence The development team would later adopt the hashtag #AgileAF - the AF, they assure, stands for Air Force. - I don't see how that's encyclopedic writing at all. I could point out more but I don't think it's necessary.

I'll be honest that I had a tough time trying to figure out which sources were actually reliable sources, and which were outlets of the US government, and then some are "news sites" run by military contractors (e.g. GovDevSecOpsHub). Normally I would've marked this as needing work and provided a list of suggested improvements or needed fixes, but this is a COI article with standard COI problems. Legoktm (talk) 03:34, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Legoktm: The source - FastCompany - uses the words modern. Sanders describes the kind of iteration inherent to modern software development as a fundamental change in the DoD’s approach to software acquisition ; That’s nothing more than best practices for modern software development, ; “The DoD violates pretty much every rule in modern product development,” Schmidt told U.S. Congress recently. Which parts of "They would just do the tanker whiteboard" is jargon? tanker? whiteboard? The terms are described in depth in the paragraphs above. The "agileAF" tag is a big deal, in multiple sources. "Not encyclopedic writing" is debatable; more important "brilliant prose" isn't a DYK criterion, this isn't a FA candidate. There are a number of primary sources, but only used for noncontroversial WP:ABOUTSELF; most of the sources like Defense News and Federal Computer Week are independent, they just specialize in covering military and government like Car and Driver specializes in covering autos. The two most used sources by far are FastCompany and Rough Translation, which don't even specialize in covering military and government. --GRuban (talk) 14:35, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The FastCompany article doesn't describe agile as modern (n.b. agile is 20+ years old). "tanker whiteboard" together is jargon. You say that it's "described in depth in the paragraphs above", but it's the first use of the word "tanker" on the page.
"AgileAF" is basically a marketing hashtag/slogan. It's mentioned once in FastCompany and not at all in Rough Translation - it's not appropriate as a section header nor is the prose appropriate. Legoktm (talk) 05:51, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Red XN - same grievance as above
  • Interesting: Green tickY
QPQ: Done.

Overall: @Graearms: Good article, but I feel as if the massive multi page references kind of hamper the article a bit. Just to take the hook for example, the hook is sourced to a page count of 16, making it hard to find the hook in the citation. So i'd prefer if more specific page numbers can be used for the citation. Onegreatjoke (talk) 20:53, 27 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Onegreatjoke: I edited the citations significantly. I added page numbers to one citation which previously lacked them, I specified the page numbers for one citation (previously it cited pages 33-54 when it really only cited page 36), I used the rp template to specify the page or pages being referenced each time one citation was used, and I added a reference by the hook in the article. These changes should address most of your concerns. Graearms (talk) 16:48, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I edited the citations a little bit more, now everything should have more specific page numbers. Graearms (talk) 22:58, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Graearms, Onegreatjoke, and Vaticidalprophet: I couldn't resolve some concerns I had about context and SYNTH, so I've pulled this nomination out of prep for now. Any ideas on resolving the questions? theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:06, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Theleekycauldron: Sorry for the delayed response. I have made some edits to the article which should address some of your criticisms. Now the hook sentence in the article should have a reputable academic secondary source next to it. The source I used to find the information originally was not the poem itself, it was the cited secondary source from DeGruyter.
In the original source it was stated: "no testimony other than Claudian’s verses (Eutr. 1.254–271) tells us about a despicable triumph in Constantinople, where Eutropius is said to have acted like an old dame who travelled far to see her daughter-in-law (arida socrus / longinquam visura nurum, ll. 269–270)." Another quote from the source was: "Furthermore, after describing Eutropius’ “feminine” triumph in Constantinople." I stated in the article that Eutropius was criticized for holding an effeminate triumph due to the usage of the word "feminine" in the article.
If you would prefer an alternative hook that does not state that the criticism was exclusively based on perceived effeminacy I would suggest: * ALT1: ... that the Roman poem In Eutropium criticized the politician Eutropius for acting like an old dame during his triumph? Source: Tougher, Shaun (2015-01-01), "Eunuchs in the East, Men in the West? Dis/unity, Gender and Orientalism in the Fourth Century", East and West in the Roman Empire of the Fourth Century, Brill, pp. 147–163, ISBN 978-90-04-29193-5, retrieved 2023-08-12 Graearms (talk) 22:39, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Onegreatjoke: As the original reviewer, can you review ALT1? Z1720 (talk) 17:32, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey there, sorry for the delay :) I do still have a problem that "effeminate" is used as an insult in this article. Just because the author of the poem thought effeminacy was an insult in the waybackwhen, doesn't mean we need to echo the idea that it's a valid criticism to make. Is there a clarification that can be made? theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 17:44, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Theleekycauldron: Whilst writing the article I was aware of the importance of portraying Claudian's viewpoints as his alone, and not those of Wikipedia. I attempted to preface each statement by clarifying that this was Claudian's perspective. For example, throughout the article there are phrases such as "Claudian considered," "Claudian wrote," "Claudian associated," or "Claudian saw." Rereading the article, I don't see any statements in which the article endorses Claudian's perspective. Would you be willing to cite some quotes from the text which you consider to be supporting his beliefs? Graearms (talk) 20:10, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, "It attempts to portray Eutropius as a corrupt, ineffective, and effeminate" seems to imply that effeminate is a valid criticism. More than that, I think I'd be most comfortable if there were some bit of text that put the notion of effeminacy in the context of the time. Why is important, what does it mean? theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 22:00, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Theleekycauldron: I would agree with the idea that the article could utilize more commentary on the cultural attitudes surrounding the criticism in Ancient Rome.
However, I would disagree with the claim that the cited statement is biased. There is a clear distinction made between the perspective of Wikipedia and the perspective of Claudian. It is written in third-person language. The speaker, Wikipedia, is describing the perspective of another entity, not describing its own perspective. Wikipedia is not claiming that Eutropius is corrupt, ineffective, or effeminate. The article is merely stating that Claudian viewed him that way, which he did. The article also makes no attestations to the veracity of Claudian’s argument. In the previous sentence, the article describes Claudian’s account as fictional. The article also states that he merely attempted to portray Eutropius as effeminate, not that he successfully proved his claims or that his argument had any merit.
At every other point in the article, there is clear distance between the claims of Claudian and the perspective of Wikipedia. In the paragraph which discusses Claudian’s criticism of effeminacy, each statement is clarified to be Claudian’s view. There are phrases such as: “Claudian considered,” “Claudian wrote,” “Claudian also criticized." All of these phrases showcase to the reader that the criticism is the opinion of Claudian, and not the opinion of Wikipedia. Graearms (talk) 00:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You certainly did do a good job of that :) my point was more that if it says "he criticized him as corrupt and effeminate", without any context anywhere in the article, that kind of implies that it's normal to criticize guys for being effeminate. Like, you wouldn't write "he criticized him as kind, warm-hearted, and corrupt" without explaining it, because those first two things are not things people get criticized for. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 07:12, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

one of the 2023 participants will cross the finish line as the Chicago Marathon's significant one-millionth finisher
    • reviewed: hotel normandie (new york city)
    • comment:
in alt0, the two runners being referred to are kelvin kiptum, the second fastest male marathoner ever, and ruth chepng'etich, the second fastest female marathoner ever. "the two second-fastest marathoners ever" is admittedly an unusual way to word this. i thought it was somewhat quirky and avoids a bit of redundancy, but have also added alt0a if the wording seems inappropriate. i think the two second-fastest wheelchair marathoners ever are also planning to compete, but i haven't found reliable sources to support this yet.
also, i believe i have coded the hooks so that the tenses will correctly update during the day of the race. i believe the race is scheduled to start at 12:30 utc, so the winners are first runner is likely to finish sometime between 14:30 and 14:35. i don't know when exactly the millionth finisher will finish the race, but it looks like it will take around 90 minutes for everyone to start the race, and the average marathon finish time is around 04:30 (four and a half hours), so i am using a finish time estimate of 17:45. also, the code for the hooks should replace "today's" with "the 2023" once the day is over (where "2023" is part of the link text, and "the" is not).
update: welp, it looks like tigst assefa just destroyed the world record last weekend at berlin, making alt0 and alt0a no longer true, so i am striking them. (i think this is probably the best reason i have ever had for striking a hook.) alt1 remains valid. also, i have since learned from this source that more than 960,000 runners have finished the chicago marathon so far, and more than 47,000 are scheduled to run this year, so am adjusting my estimated finish time of the millionth finisher to 18:45 utc, based on the results of runners who finished in the 15th percentile last year, as seen here.
i have also updated the DYK date request template. if you approve of the date request, please replace "approved=no" with "approved=yes". you can also use the optional "approvedby" parameter if you wish.
i declare that i am not aware of having any conflict of interest with the 2023 chicago marathon.

i'm currently working on a proper update for both the article and the nomination. unfortunately, this may take some time, as i admittedly hadn't planned for the possibility of having this hook reviewed after the race. this might be just as well, as the article was recently linked from an itn blurb for a few days (though not as the bolded link, so the article remains eligible at dyk), so it may be better to delay posting this hook for a while anyway. dying (talk) 02:59, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Hi Blythwood (talk), nice article on an interesting subject, review follows: article created 27 August and exceeds minimum length; article is well written; article is cited inline throughout to what look to be reliable sources; I didn't pick up any issues with overly close paraphrasing in a spot check on the sources I could access, Earwig only picks up an attributed quote; the hook fact is fine but is a little mundane, is there something else to be said? Perhaps a description of his "notably classical" style or the fact that much of his work is now lost? - Dumelow (talk) 21:47, 4 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Without pinging, just to say that I'm still thinking through an alternative hook and should have a reply soon. Blythwood (talk) 00:10, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Hi Dumelow, I've been thinking and decided that I'd prefer to keep the original hook if that's OK. My reasons are that I don't think there's a simple term for the style he worked in. ("Classical" nails the feel of timelessness his work was going for but isn't an real one-word summary, the Romans didn't use lower case, "neo-Renaissance" might be nearer the mark.) And going with the idea that much of his work is now lost for me makes the hook a bit depressing and like there's no point in looking at the article-plenty of his work survives and the article has photographs of it. I'd like to keep the original hook. Blythwood (talk) 23:22, 17 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Red XN - n
  • Interesting: Green tickY
QPQ: None required.

Overall: @The Green Star Collector: Good article, but

  • "Mario Party DS was succeeded by Mario Party 9 for the Wii in 2012. The game was rereleased on the Virtual Console for the Wii U in 2016."

and

  • "By September 2015, Mario Party DS had sold over 9 million units worldwide, making it the eleventh best-selling game for the Nintendo DS."

Don't seem to be verified by their citations. I also can't find what verifies the hook nor what verifies what citation 19 cites but maybe that's just me being dumb. Onegreatjoke (talk) 03:17, 31 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Was planning to review this so I'll just leave this as a comment. I have to disagree with OGJ here that the original hook is interesting. I see. The citation is supposed to indicate that every installment after Mario Party DS is developed by NDcube rather than Hudson Soft or simply "Hudson". @Z1720: That's a good idea. I actually just thought of another hook viewers might find interesting: that all of the minigames feature the characters competing at a much smaller size, coinciding with the events of the game's story mode. However, I'm not sure what would be the best/most interesting way to praise this. ★ The Green Star Collector ★ (talk) 23:22, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Szmenderowiecki: After looking at User:Szmenderowiecki/Sort_of_recognised_contributions, it is not clear which of your DYK reviews you are claiming for this article. This is especially made difficult because the "Submitted my humble opinion" section lists DYK nominations, PRs, and GAN reviews. Please wikilink to the specific nomination that you are using as a QPQ for this nomination. Z1720 (talk) 15:14, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't wan't to claim one review the second time. I reformatted the section to make clear what is DYK, what is a peer review or a good article.
Choose any - the whole point of QPQ is that you have roughly the same number of DYK reviews as DYKs, and I have more. If you still insist, I dunno, choose the last one from the list. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 18:29, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • The article has several citation needed tags to resolve. Szmenderowiecki, as per the comments by Z1720, please declare exactly which QPQ you are claiming for this nomination to make it easier on your fellow editors to validate. I am willing to do the full review once the QPQ credit is clear. Flibirigit (talk) 16:21, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, take this one as QPQ. Whatever.
As for the citation tags:
The one referencing the 1939 election was remedied because I think that the first part of the sentence was not obvious.
I removed the tag at further cemented the long reign of Duplessis because the two sources mentioned in the sentence both make this conclusion. Grouping them at the end would be inappropriate because each covers a different aspect of Duplessis's longevity.
I added the source for the third tag.
I removed the tag for the sentence ending with Quiet Revolution because its usual definition is a period in the history of Quebec that starts from the defeat in 1960. A bit of WP:BLUESKY situation here.
I am waiting for your review. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 09:58, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fixed Ref 54, you can choose to promote either. Unfortunately the limited space I have does not allow me to explain why he is so controversial, so I think alt2 is slightly better because well, why would you withhold a monument? But if you find alt1 better, I'm fine. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 15:40, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've just noticed that "avoid political tensions" is in quotes here, but not in the article, and it's an offline source so I can't see which it is.
ALT4: ... that comparisons to the Quebec premier Maurice Duplessis have been described as "the supreme insult"? Source: https://reviewcanada.ca/magazine/2021/06/alive-and-kicking/, you'll need to add this to the article.
ALT5: ... that a monument of Maurice Duplessis was hidden by later Quebec premiers for sixteen years to avoid political tensions? Source: Gélinas, Ferretti & Bédard 2010, p. 389-396, add or remove quotes as appropriate.--Launchballer 07:57, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Launchballer, alt4 is OK but not brilliant. "has been described" is vague, and mostly Quebeckers have a perception of him being associated with the Great Darkness. Let's leave it aside for now and return to it only if everything else fails.
Alt5 misses the point. Just hiding a monument for 16 years could be explained away by all sorts of reasoning, but the point is that it blatantly ignored the will of the Legislative Assembly, which passed a special law to build the monument. Not that people cared about that apparently, which was why it was in hiding until 1977. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 13:59, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment Seriously, have we sunk to the level of where we present statements made by prosecutors in ongoing investigations as facts? Dahn (talk) 10:29, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The statement was made by Michigan Republican Party chair Laura Cox to House investigators and reported by the Washington Post. It doesn't come from prosecutors and appears to not even be included in the indictment. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 03:19, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is a claim, not a fact; it is made in the context of an ongoing investigation; and, what is more, it is made about living persons. We don't abandon those standards just because it is about a case involving Trump. In fact, the entire article needs to be reworded to distinguish verified facts from claims made by this and that alleged participant. Dahn (talk) 13:26, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Perhaps an "according to" phrase could be added to the hook. But everything in the article itself is cited to a reliable news source; the indictment itself is not used as a source at all. There is no controversy that most of these events happened, though the judicial process will decide whether or not they are crimes. If you have specific sentences in the article that could benefit from an "according to" clarification, please let me know. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 19:49, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Full review needed. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 05:52, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Antony-22: part of the problem, as I see it, is that you are relying on the secondary sources to report this information accurately. As is often the case, the media tends to shorten, paraphrase, and rewrite the original story to make it more palatable for general readers and viewers. In this case, I think it would be instructive to go back to the Jan 6 final report and see how the story was altered for presentation. When you do this, you find the following on p. 354:
"Former Michigan GOP Chair Laura Cox told the Select Committee that an attorney who "said he was working with the President’s Campaign" informed her that the Michigan slate for President Trump was "planning to meet in the capit[o]l and hide overnight so that they could fulfill the role of casting their vote in, per law, in the Michigan chambers." She said that she "told him in no uncertain terms that that was insane and inappropriate," and that she warned Michigan’s senate majority leader as a precaution.(106-107: Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Deposition of Laura Cox, [May 3, 2022], pp. 53–54.) Instead, the group of fake electors in Michigan signed their paperwork in the State GOP headquarters, where staff told them not to bring phones inside.(108: Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, Deposition of Mayra Rodriguez, [Feb. 22, 2022], pp. 14–18.)
Although there isn't much difference, you can see there's a bit more to it than Laura Cox making the claim. It turns out, she got it secondhand from an unnamed attorney. While I have no reason to believe it isn't true, it's odd that the attorney isn't named in the report. And if Cox is repeating something she heard from an unnamed source, one has to be a bit more skeptical simply because it can't be verified. Check the rest of your article to make sure this isn't a problem elsewhere. For me personally, as long as it clarified that Cox got the information from elsewhere and this material is found in the Jan 6 report, I don't have a problem with it, but others likely might, and you might want to strike that hook for this reason and focus on more solid aspects of the case. Viriditas (talk) 23:32, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I struck the hook, because I can't defend it as a classically defined "fact", and since it is not important or relevant to the overall case that you are writing about, another hook should be created. Viriditas (talk) 23:41, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I struck all of the hooks based on my assessment above. Please find other hooks that are based on facts that are unlikely to change. Laura Cox's claim is based on an unnamed source (at least in the Jan. 6 report) and I can't see how a secondhand account based on an unnamed source on a controversial topic could be used as a hook. Viriditas (talk) 23:47, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Viriditas: Thanks for pointing this out; I've revised the article text to include this. How about this hook? Or do you have ideas for anything more interesting?
ALT3: ... that some of the Michigan fake electors attempted to enter the State Capitol, but were turned away by the state police? Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 03:58, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Antony-22: I'm reading through the article now. The planning section could use some copyediting and refocus on the narrative. If you read it as someone who knows nothing about the topic (beginner's mind), it can be a touch confusing. For example, you don't connect the dots between Biden's victory and the plan to produce false electoral vote documents. Lots of sources do this, so I'm sure you can find one. For readers unfamiliar with this topic, you really need to explain this. You may be able to gleam some ideas from Federal prosecution of Donald Trump (election obstruction case), but this CBS News report gives an example of how to do it: According to the indictment, "when Trump could not persuade state officials to illegally swing the election in his favor, he and his Republican allies began recruiting a slate of fake electors in seven battleground states". You're missing the "when Trump could not persuade state officials to illegally swing the election in his favor" part that connects Biden's win with the false elector scheme. Viriditas (talk) 22:32, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Viriditas: I'm not really sure that this article needs an extended narrative about the interactions with the state legislature, as only the would-be electors themselves are defendants. The beginning of the second paragraph of that section already succinctly makes the connection you mentioned. That being said, this sort of copyediting is outside the DYK criteria, it's more more something I'd expect to see at a GA review. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 05:43, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think you misread what I wrote. Read it again. I’m not asking you to expand the narrative, I’m asking you to connect the dots, because as someone who knows this topic, I found the background confusing. It sounds like you are in favor of reverse chronology? That’s not a style I find helpful for the reader. Viriditas (talk) 06:05, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New review needed. Viriditas (talk) 06:16, 3 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

        • Fine, how's the Alt I added above? SilverserenC 12:23, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
          • The text to source integrity is better now; the main issue I see with that is that the "sweethearts" refers not just to Franklin's character, but also to that of Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. I still do not think the source is particularly good (a throwaway comment about the censor in an opinionated article on a different film) so I would still suggest to try to find a better sourced hook. —Kusma (talk) 14:11, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

              • Well, you could try to work with the actual words of the censor Lloyd Binford (a rather unpleasant white supremacist) instead of letting someone else put words in his mouth. See this scholarly article, for example, which has some of the quotes about Brewster's Millions (1945 film). BTW I think there is indeed another film involving Franklin that was censored by Binford: A Song Is Born, where Franklin seems to have an uncredited part. Unfortunately most of the sources I have found do not focus on Franklin. —Kusma (talk) 22:51, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
                • I've added another alt, Kusma. SilverserenC 03:25, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
                  • That seems covered by the source, although it seems they only used her in distance shots and didn't use her voice so the switch wouldn't be noticed. —Kusma (talk) 14:16, 14 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I suppose at this point it would be best to get a fresh review, with the focus being on ALT2. SilverserenC 01:48, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please don't withdraw the nomination. My intention was not to downplay Canadian politics on DYK and I apologize if my words gave that impression. In fact, I actually think ALT2 is a pretty good hook! Though I suppose with ALT2, we could just focus on the "biggest consumer of paper" angle? The other parts seem to complicate the hook. Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Red XN - ?
  • Interesting: Green tickY
QPQ: Done.

Overall: The article was expanded more than fivefold from May to August 2023, and nominated for DYK eight days after the expansion completed. WP:IAR is appropriate here to accept a substantial contribution to Wikipedia. Length is adequate, and the article is neutral in tone. Sourcing in the article is mostly complete. Two direct quotes need a citation at the end of the sentence as per WP:DYKCRIT. The "Published works" section needs a citation. No plagiarism concerns were found. All images in the article are in the public domain, although no image is used in this nomination. The QPQ requirement is complete. Hook ALT0 is unlikely to be interesting to a broad audience, unless the reader knows about Papineau or the rebellion. I have struck ALT0. Hooks ALT1 and ALT2 will both be interesting to a broad audience. The wording of ALT1 needs a slight adjustment. It reads as if the estate was valued at £30,000 when he died, as opposed to 20 yeas after his death. ALT2 cannot be verified as is. The hook reads "the single biggest consumer of paper in the province", whereas the article states "was one of the largest consumers of paper in Lower Canada." Further, the sentence which supports the hook is not cited immediately at the end as per WP:DYKCRIT. Overall, this is a welcome contribution to Wikipedia, and I look forward to seeing it on the main page. Flibirigit (talk) 12:25, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Onceinawhile and ElijahPepe: In the article I am not sure the youtube video should be where it is per MOS:LAYOUT. Also I think we need to attribute the quotes in the hook. Bruxton (talk) 22:47, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not sure where you're getting either from. The placement of the videos is fine and the quote has been attributed. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 01:08, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don’t mind re MOS:LAYOUT, but it isn’t a requirement for DYK. The article is up for GA, so should be covered there.
On the quote, it is inline attributed in the article. I don’t think it needs to be inline attributed in the hook, partly because it encourages clicks, but mainly because the statement is “sky is blue”, as most Key&Peele sketches are about this topic. What we could do is reword, remove the quotation marks, and replace the dual identity with a link to the article Double consciousness. Onceinawhile (talk) 06:12, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Onceinawhile and ElijahPepe: I mentioned MOS:LAYOUT as FYI. But the quotation in the hook is from the podcast Code Switch. Maybe @Theleekycauldron: can help? Bruxton (talk) 14:35, 10 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(here by request) NPR is reliable for its opinion, and constitutes due weight, but the hook will need to be attributed :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 21:26, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

OK here. Onceinawhile (talk) 15:04, 13 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I think this hook could use more work. Even within the confines of DYKFICTION, we have secondary analysis of some of the sketch's distinctive quotes:

Qin also highlights the word choice used by Garvey, contrasting his slang with his use of words such as "insubordinate and churlish", "mischievous and deceitful", and "chicanerous and deplorable", the lattermost use of "chicanery" being an attempt to use parallelism.

This is an interesting and famous sketch, but the current hook doesn't even clearly express what it is. Could we experiment with something off the analysis of the sketch's language? Vaticidalprophet 04:37, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I also gotta scratch my head at the submission of Template:Did you know nominations/Sommer Ray as a QPQ. I know this is annoying, since we assume in good faith that anyone that writes a full review has done one, but not writing a full review (in this case, only the QPQ and hook were checked) can't count, especially when the article was subsequently maintenance tagged. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 08:31, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I'll also throw in my suggestion, the result of workshopping between myself, Vati, and Elijah at different times:
  • ALT1: ... that the Key & Peele sketch "Substitute Teacher" juxtaposes language like "insubordinate and churlish" with slang?
Given that it's a secondary interpretation of the plot, I think it clears the DYKFICTION bar. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 08:45, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Onceinawhile: As the original reviewer, can you evaluate the new ALT hooks above? Z1720 (talk) 18:37, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am not a fan of ALT1, as it is quite tangential to the topic. How about:
  • ALT2: …that the Key & Peele sketch "Substitute Teacher" has been analyzed for its racial commentary and educational insight?
I think it will surprise readers in a positive way. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:19, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Article created 6 September. No issues of copyvio or plagiarism. All sources appear reliable. QPQ is done. Hooks are interesting and sourced. I like the primary hook best. Looks ready to go. Thriley (talk) 20:00, 7 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Longhornsg and Thriley: Neither hook is OK in its current state. The claim that there are no kosher bagel wholesalers in Europe sourced to a direct quote from the deli, but is presented as a fact in wikivoice. It would be better if a better source were found verifying this claim, or the claim needs to be qualified and/or attributed. (If you do an Internet search for kosher bagel wholesaler Europe, there appears to be at least one.) The "first fully kosher eatery" claim in ALT1 is too bold since the article hedges by saying "believed to be". Cielquiparle (talk) 15:51, 16 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Cielquiparle:, appreciate the diligence. Point taken about this first hook. I can't find sourcing beyond the deli owner's self-proclaimed statement, so we can move on from that one for now. To address the hedging about the 1960s date, it's safe to say that the deli is the only fully kosher eatery in Ireland, language that is consistent across the two sources above and the article sourcing. Proposing the below, then:
Not a review, more of a comment, but wasn't there a rule or guideline that discouraged hooks whose truth values may change? For example, ALT2 might be true at a certain period, but may not be true in the future (either because it closes or another kosher eatery opens). Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:45, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Longhornsg, Thriley, and Cielquiparle: I checked the source and it doesn't seem to directly say that it's the only fully kosher eatery in Ireland, only that it's the first one in over 50 years. With this in mind, would this work?
ALT3... that when Deli 613 opened in March 2023, it was the first kosher eatery in Ireland in over 50 years?
Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:12, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ALT3 definitely works. Thriley (talk) 12:21, 28 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I've relabeled my hook as ALT3 as "ALT2" was a typo. In any case it needs a new review. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:13, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I'm wary of any hook that claims "first", "only", etc. These are impossible to verify with any degree of certainty. I'll also go out on a limb (because I'm far from an expert on this) and talk a bit about the only kosher eatery and no kosher bagel wholesalers in Europe. There is no such thing as "kosher". There is "Some authority has said this is kosher". And while I'd hesitate to say that some are stricter than others, I will quote from My Jewish Learning where it says "some people only trust certain organizations to do a good job of making sure something is kosher." So, instead of "there are no kosher bagel wholesalers in Europe", I'd be more willing to accept "there are no kosher bagel wholesalers in Europe which satisfy Deli 613's requirements" because at least we can base that on a statement from Deli 613 as opposed to an exhaustive search of all bagel wholesalers in Europe and an unknown standard by which they're being evaluated. Although even that is questionable because how do we know that there isn't a bagel wholesaler somewhere in Europe which Deli 613 isn't aware of. So we're down to "Deli 613 hasn't yet found a bagel wholesaler in Europe which meets their standards for being kosher". RoySmith (talk) 23:05, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RoySmith: Would a hook narrowing it to just Ireland address some of your concerns, or would it still require extraordinary sourcing? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:07, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't understand your question. We're talking about ALT3? It's already just about Ireland. What changes are you proposing? In any case, it doesn't address the problem with "first" and "only" being basically impossible to verify. RoySmith (talk) 11:36, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Your comment above seemed to mostly be referring to Europe and I was asking if the scope of the hook being narrowed to just Ireland would remove or at least alleviate the concerns. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 14:05, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@RoySmith and Narutolovehinata5: Understand the caution about "first" and "only". This case I don't think is an especially extraordinary claim. The Jewish community and pool of kosher-eating Irish people are so small (estimated at below 3000 and overwhelmingly concentrated in Dublin), that the opening and operating of any kosher-certified eatery would be pretty apparent and newsworthy. I would be confident saying that people who keep kosher, whatever the level, would know whether there was any such restaurant in the country before Deli 613's opening earlier this year. Longhornsg (talk) 22:19, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Longhornsg My apologies for not responding quicker. There's two issues here. First is that DYK has had chronic problems with these types of hooks. We think something is "first" and then somebody pops up on WP:ERRORS with an example of an earlier one. There's just no way to prove something is "first" if the category is open-ended. "First person from Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal in luge", sure. There's a finite number of those given out and there's good records kept, so you can do an exhaustive search of everybody who got one. That's not the case here. The other issue is that while I'm sure you are speaking in good faith when you say "I would be confident saying that ...", that's WP:OR, which is kind of the antithesis of a WP:RS. Федор зарезал отца, после чего Иван Грозный заявил: «предал отца – предашь и меня»

"Another "threat" was a proclamation in 1564...protesting the murder without trial or investigation of the general Prince Dmitrii Fedorov Ovshchinin-Telepnev-Obolenskii (Ovchina-Obolenskii), who had accused Fedor Basmanov of having pederastic relations with the tsar (charges also made by Kurbskii and something one might expect of a paranoid). Фаворит отправился к царю и плача рассказал ему об оскорблении. Разгневанный дерзостью Грозный пригласил Овчинина во дворец и после пира велел спуститься в винный погреб, чтобы закончить там праздник. • Comment: @Lefcentreright: I think it might help, in terms of hooky interest, to simplify a bit and focus on the fact that Sacco is a former musician who used to play music at political party rallies before being elected as a member of that party. I could envision several ways of doing this, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up on what I think could be a great proposed hook. Viriditas (talk) 21:16, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Viriditas: I have changed the ALT0 hook to something more in line with what you suggested above. I think (hope) it will work. For some odd reason, I have really struggled with coming up with hooks for this DYK nom. Best,  Lefcentreright  Discuss  22:44, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Sources - all good, taking the NYT ones on AGF as I cannot read them. Reference 5 needs tidying up, it is a bare URL and needs converting to cite news template or similar, with a date.
  • "Square" of square foot gardening has been capitalised in places in the article - it shouldn't be, going by the style in the linked article about it (and therefore also needs lowercasing in hook).
  • Hook - I was actually able to read the paywalled NYT ref through Earwig (forgot about that as a trick!) but it reports the quote as "I garden with a salad bowl in mind, not a wheel barrel". That's a bit odd (I've never heard of a wheel barrel) but is apparently a common mistake in English according to Google so is possibly an accurate quote....can you confirm if original article says wheel barrow or barrel?

Otherwise all good, and I find the GIF eye-catching. DrThneed (talk) 06:52, 27 September 2023 (UTC) DrThneed (talk) 06:52, 27 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Comment: The hook about the 2 operas one day would read in full "... that Luca Salsi was recognised as baritone superman by the international press in April 2015 when he not only stepped in on short notice for Plácido Domingo at the Metropolitan Opera in an afternoon concert of Verdi's Ernani, but also performed the same evening in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor as planned." which is too long. Help? - The short hook about recent news is perhaps even more interesting, because there were protests in front of the opera house, not because of him but Netrebko. To feed our broad audience. To get a feeling for the production (then with Plácido Domingo, - again) see YouTube - full length, but a glimpse will tell the atmosphere of what may be regarded as Kupfer's legacy. - I am sorry I missed this nom by a day, busy both here and in real life. It was long enough from the start.

  • Should the subject always be referred to by their full name "Trần Lập" throughout the article? The convention is to use full name in the first sentence, and surname after.
  • Use of time-sensitive content: As of 2020, it was said that their son was in tenth grade and their daughter was in seventh grade. I think maybe this is TMI. It's best not to add information that can change, especially about their children. Not sure this is relevant to the bio.
  • VNG Corporation: I had to read between the lines to figure out this was a technology company behind the ZingMP3 brand and products. It would be helpful to prompt the reader in the first usage instance. For example, "On 3 December 2014, The People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City conducted the first instance of a civil lawsuit for digital rights between Trần Lập and VNG, a technology company that owns the music website ZingMP3. According to his lawsuit claim, Trần Lập accused VNG of having uploaded a recording of his song - "Đường đến vinh quang" on their music website without his permission."
  • Copyediting needed: There's some easy to fix issues with the language, such as in the Legacy section and elsewhere. I don't really know how to fix this statement, so please rewrite it: " During a Bức Tường's performance held in 2011, drawing over 7,000 rock fans, VnExpress wrote that "Trần Lập was occasionally lost his voice" due to "time that has had an significant impact on his voice".
  • Hook: Try to shorten it: "... that the dispute between Trần Lập and VNG was the first ever civil lawsuit about digital content copyright in Vietnam?"
  • More later. Viriditas (talk) 22:35, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I disagree with these proposed DYK framing's accuracy and it's also provocative in a way I don't think is positive for DYK. Josephus had a history of the Jews back in the Roman era, so why would you have DYK hook that says the first history was written by Protestants? Also, all major publications of Jewish history have been influenced by the political climates of their respective times isn't that true of all histories ever? And why would you write it like that? Andre🚐 14:29, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Any concern with ALT2? It is Yerushalmi's most famous phrase.
ALT0 should have the word "modern" in there, thanks for pointing out.
I agree that ALT1 is true of all histories and so not unique here. Onceinawhile (talk) 14:40, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I oppose all 3. Don't you think that's a little provocative to be writing days before Yom Kippur about lapsed Jews? Andre🚐 19:26, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This video is well worth watching; it is extremely well done. Professor David N. Myers, the Sady and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History at UCLA, opens with the statement that "Rare is the book that is spoken about with such reverence and such admiration 40 years later." If you don't have time to watch it all, skip to 46:40 for an interpretation of Yerushalmi's comment being quoted here. Further context is at [4] and [5]. Also pinging Oceanflynn who wrote our article on the book from which those oft-quoted words came. Onceinawhile (talk) 21:48, 23 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I also oppose all the suggestions above, but would hope that we can find a hook for Zakhov whose publication continues to be honoured through articles and scholarly events 10, 25, and even 40 years after its publication. A hook that is neither insensitive, inaccurate, etc but newsworthy will most likely be found in Myers or in a closer reading of the video suggested by Onceinawhile. I will look at this more closely and perhaps update the article.Oceanflynn (talk) 02:39, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
After reviewing this, I'm just chiming in to oppose all three as well and recommend that they be crossed out. Viriditas (talk) 22:35, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Below is a proposed alternative:
  • ALT3: ... that the first comprehensive publication of Jewish history by a modern Jewish author left "the differences among various phases of the Jewish past clearly apparent"? Source: Meyer 1988, p. 175
Onceinawhile (talk) 09:01, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Comment: Way too ambiguous for me, but others might disagree. How about finding a non-controversial, matter of fact hook that everyone can easily agree is workable? Viriditas (talk) 23:39, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All of the four hooks I have suggested so far are uncontroversial, and confirmed by all the core sources on this subject. I can bring the other sources if helpful.
Can you explain what you mean by ambiguous in this context? I can then try to reword one or all of the four proposed hooks. Onceinawhile (talk) 05:54, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I find it helpful to move forward, not focus on looking backwards. Andrevan just edited the article which provides a good hook: "... that Heinrich Graetz was one of the first historians to write a modern Jewish historiography from a Jewish perspective?" Viriditas (talk) 21:23, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't know if I'm allowed to support a hook based on my own edit, but if I am, I support Viritidas' idea. Andre🚐 21:25, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Per wp:DYKINT: The hook should be likely to be perceived as unusual or intriguing by readers with no special knowledge or interest. The new proposed hook basically says: “a person was one of the first to do something”. It needs a (fact-based) twist, perhaps about what Graetz did that changed the way Jewish history was written, or about how his work is perceived today. Onceinawhile (talk) 22:15, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Grätz was a German Jew that some people consider a proto-Zionist since he, independent of Herzl, proposed a national identity for Jewish people, but he was also a German emancipationist and while he's on record supporting things that people later associate with Zionism, he's an interesting player in his own right. Andre🚐 22:53, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree – the dichotomy around Graetz's motivations for writing what was the first fulsome attempt at Jewish nationalism in historical writing is very interesting. Onceinawhile (talk) 23:42, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You should go ahead and add your interpretation to WP:DYKINT and see if it has consensus. Viriditas (talk) 22:17, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I had another idea after discussing with Andrevan on the article talk page – one very central to the article:

  • "…that studies of modern Jewish historiography have underlined the "break between a traditional Jewish understanding of history and its modern transformation"?"

Onceinawhile (talk) 22:35, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Again, ambiguous, too general, and not at all interesting. How about focusing on tangible specifics that readers can sink their teeth into? Viriditas (talk) 22:37, 23 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Perhaps:
ALT2 would need a footnote to meet DYK requirements. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 05:21, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the suggestions, but you will know me for long enough to know that (ALT2) mere quantity is something I hate (we had this singer about whom we only said that she performed Carmen 300 times, and I am still ashamed), and (ALT1) devoting 3/4 of the hook to already known Michael Jackson seems undue weight to me (and he doesn't need more attention), and means omitting that the wonderful thing about this musician was his versatility, brilliant enough a pianist to tour with one of the notable conductors at the time, and conducting both symphony as band, and again notable groups playing, and I left out teaching, all these international school concerts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:06, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe we can just let the reviewer decide what hook they want? If they prefer ALT0 I won't object, I'm just giving alternative options. We can agree to disagree on what makes a good hook, it's the reviewer's job to decide what would be the best option. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:40, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't think there are objective things to decide what makes a good hook, it's always good in a certain respect. Why would the personal preference of some promoter carry more weight than that of the article writer, I wonder. Quite objectively, ALT1 says about the subject only that he was a composer and a conductor (leaving out pianist, academic teacher, leaving out what kind of music) and all the rest is about someone famous. It's name-dropping, if you ask me. As objectively, we can see that ALT2 gives impressive numbers, without a word about what kind of music was performed when. I have a personal opinion about that kind of statement that I tried to express. It is a personal goal of mine to say something about a subject that can't be said about anybody else, and that makes a good hook for me, - not the number of clicks that can be expected. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:39, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ps: I believe that the arranging for Jackson is even more interesting when the arranger was before described as someone unlikely to be asked such as thing, than with a general description making it sound as if it was just like his normal job. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:55, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Onegreatjoke: Hi, thanks for reviewing this! The sources were a long shot because the source only covers Matt Preston's appearance. The over 44 cast members is actually an amalgamation of a bunch of primary sources (the episodes themselves), which wouldn't actually cover all the cast members because a lot of the guest characters (like the Driver or Constable Ian McKay – see the article) were never going to be covered in media sources since, well, they're guest characters. These characters are mentioned in the article, but the episodes themselves serve as the reference. So, yeah, I was a bit iffy on that source, but it served well for Matt Preston and the episodes themselves serve as sources for other 43 cast members. Is there any way we could get around this or anything? Thanks a heap. - Therealscorp1an (talk) 03:35, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Therealscorp1an: That's definitely interesting of a source choice. I'm not exactly sure if how good of a source that is, especially with the other youtube sources (still not exactly sure how that youtube source fits with alt1 to be honest). It might be good enough to approve though it depends. Onegreatjoke (talk) 18:12, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Not a review, but you might want to link the target article from your proposed hook. Schwede66 19:13, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Still not a review, but I've been wondering where "Die" in the title comes from. It's a definite article in German, but the Dutch don't use that. I'm wondering whether your reading of this German source somehow convinced you that the title should be Die Kuranten. Because if that's the case, well that's the source of your error / misunderstanding. Schwede66 21:18, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @Schwede66:, thank you for your comment, I have linked the target article. To your second point, I didn't name or create the article. The Die of the title is the Yiddish definite plural article, although it is more commonly written today as di (Yiddish: די). Given that it's a Yiddish-language paper that seems appropriate, particularly different that the title is Kuranten (a plural noun) and that there are two forms of the publication, one published on Tuesdays and one on Fridays. It is also a title that has been used for the publication in English-language print since, per Google Books, 1985, if not earlier. I don't see how this is pertinent to the scope of the DYK review but I hope this clarifies your misunderstanding. Kazamzam (talk) 01:23, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thanks. The target article is supposed to be linked in bold font. And given that it's a newspaper, it should be in italics, too, as per MOS:NAMESANDTITLES. Good to have clarified that "Die" is a definite article in Yiddish. It's not strictly necessary as part of the DYK review to sort out naming issues, but in a roundabout way, it is. When an article is on the main page, it gets thousands of eyes on it and if it's wrong, somebody will no doubt come along and fix it. Firstly, there's WP:DEFINITE and that suggests that "Die" shouldn't be part of the title. Chances are that someone will move the article while it's on the main page, and that would trigger WP:MPNOREDIRECT. Hence the item would turn up at WP:ERRORS, as only admins can fix redirects on the main page. As such, it's best to ensure that the title is correct before we put something up via DYK. With that in mind, do you believe that the article should be moved?
  • And given that I'm commenting on all sorts of issues, I might as well do a proper review of this nomination. Schwede66 01:39, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I don't think it needs to be changed given there are exceptions to WP:DEFINITE and one of these is The New York Times. Since the guideline explicitly mentions that newspapers are an exception to this, I think the current title is okay. I will double check in the archival material to confirm and get back to you. Thank you for your other suggestions and for being thorough. Kazamzam (talk) 01:50, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • It's absolutely not a problem to leave it the way it is. In that case, I will move-protect it for the time that it's on the main page – problem solved. Schwede66 02:40, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Expansion started yesterday and the article has gone from a short paragraph to a lot of prose; it's plenty long enough. The language is neutral. Referencing is not sufficient; I have tagged all paragraphs that are uncited but there is more content that ought to be referenced apart from those three instances. Earwig is clean. There is one prior DYK credit, hence a QPQ is not required. I cannot sign off on the hook; the source talks about the oldest known Yiddish newspaper in the world whereas the hook says the oldest Jewish newspaper – those are different things. The hook is easy to fix; referencing will require a bit more work. Schwede66 02:37, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Thank you for your review. I have added references for each of your tags but I agree there could be more - the majority of the information came from the Pach thesis (2014) and I didn't want to over-cite the same source but there are limited references because it's such a niche topic. I will continue working on this throughout the week.
The question of 'oldest Yiddish' vs. 'oldest Jewish' is contentious, but I think the sentence I have moved to the lede and the accompanying references make an argument for why this is the case, as opposed to Gazeta de Amsterdam. That is the oldest Yiddish publication is, as far as I have seen, undisputed in the scholarly literature and I am fine updating the hook to reflex that as more neutral language that would not be disputed. Kazamzam (talk) 14:27, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Convention is to refer to subsequent use of the artist's name as "Sher-Gil". This can be observed in the sources, as well as in Wikipedia:Biography dos and don'ts: "Use full name in the first sentence, and surname after." However, there may be exceptions to this, and if I'm missing it here, let me know. Viriditas (talk) 00:20, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • You don't refer to years or dates. For one of many examples, you write, The Story Teller set a record as the highest-priced Indian artwork globally. When was this? Also, see the body of the article where you don't mention any time periods. A few examples: in the description section, you don't mention when the setting of the painting was supposed to take place. Is it 1937 as we are meant to assume? Also, you mention that Raza's Gestation set a new record. When was this? Viriditas (talk) 00:26, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Foreign language sources are 100% acceptable, and your refusing to accept them without someone else reviewing them does not assume good faith toward my efforts. Who made you the ultimate arbiter of acceptable sources? I made sure to not give the negative items in the article undue weight, and I presented them with very neutral wording. Additionally, those negative items have absolutely zero to do with the initial hook or two of the alts. Sorry if I sound a bit peeved, but I am. I've never run into this kind of problem in the past with any article I've worked on, so having you question my honesty regarding the article sources is a bit irritating, to say the least. You're treating me as if I'm some newb who doesn't have nearly 20 years' experience working here on Wikipedia. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 18:03, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
          • I understand what you're saying. I'm not questioning your honesty, and I can't speak for what has happened to previous reviews. But we're talking about a public figure being accused of multiple felonies. It's important that we get it right. I'm also not putting myself up as the "ultimate arbiter of acceptable sources". If somebody else feels comfortable approving this, that's their call. RoySmith (talk) 21:25, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
            • He wasn't just accused. He was convicted twice, which is clearly stated in the sources used. I've even added more refs. The article doesn't dwell on that, however, and 90% of the article is about everything but that. ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 00:02, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Chidgk1: New enough and long enough. QPQ present. I think the article needs more prose work as it is awkward in places like you might expect from a translation (three examples below). I am looking at this article and finding the hook uninteresting because it begs the question "how" or "why". More information about Hồng's body of environmental work/activism would really help this hook. Sammi Brie (she/her • tc) 16:16, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • "a dynamic local non-profit organization" seems you translated a WP:WEASEL word there
    • Ms. Hồng we don't use "Ms." and "Mr." in this context
    • about the arrest of a well-known environmental campaigner in Vietnam We know who this is; why does this text dance around it?
I will edit the article further - if you or anyone else has suggestions for a better hook I will be glad to hear them Chidgk1 (talk) 18:27, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • Hmm... The structure of the article makes a good hook hard because there's things that would be BLP vios in a hook and things that would be really puffy. Maybe maybe... • I think the first hook is not great as "contributed to the start of the replication crisis" can be understood negatively as in "they caused the replication crisis" when what they did was "draw attention" to the issue. AncientWalrus (talk) 02:40, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I mean, the source refers to the replication crisis in the sense of an awareness that some established research practices are problematic and research results can't be replicated, rather than these problems themselves (which, as the source also notes, had begun much earlier). But I see your point. How about this (a bit long for my taste, but still well below the 200 prose characters limit):
  • ALT2: ... that the three bloggers of Data Colada have been credited with exposing faulty research practices in the social sciences, thus contributing to the start of the replication crisis?
Regards, HaeB (talk) 03:51, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PS: I think I might still be QPQ exempt, but I did a review here anyway. Regards, HaeB (talk)

  • Comment: Hook ALT0 and ALT2 still give the faulty impression as noted above that "they caused the replication crisis". AncientWalrus was right about the clarity needed to show they "drew attention" to the replication crisis, not contributed to it. Viriditas (talk) 23:22, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(Reviewers, including at this paper, have compared the two books, giving the advantage to Mr. Faux.) When I mentioned this anecdote over lunch, Mr. Lewis leaned forward. “Here you have a person who’s written a book, and he’s trying to torpedo a rival book before it comes out?” he said. “That’s shocking. Talk about corrupt! So who do I think is more skeevy, Sam or him? I’d have to think about that.”

  • Both articles meet the technical requirements for DYK. I didn't find any close paraphrasing for either article, and QPQs have been provided. Switch Disco meets the referencing requirement, but Bou's sampling and it charting needs to be referenced.
My main concern is the hook. I'm not sure if it would be interesting to people unfamiliar with any of the artists mentioned. I've taken a look at both articles and I think there's some potential here for separate hooks for both artists. Particularly in the case of Bou, and how his firing eventually lead to his music career.
If I may, can I propose separate hooks for both Bou and Switch Disco in the meantime?
  • ALT-A: ... that musician Bou went from being fired from an IT apprenticeship for producing beats during company time, to having songs rank on the UK Singles Chart?
  • ALT-B: ... that Switch Disco's song "Everything" saw an 185% increase in its Spotify streams after it was used in the seventh series of Love Island?

Both hooks are fine by me. Bou's sampling and charting were both sourced, though I've added an extra ref before (Dale Smith) just to make it obvious.--Launchballer 05:51, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment: @W9793: I appreciate the work you've done on this article, but please be mindful of WP:PSTS: "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published secondary sources, and to a lesser extent, on tertiary sources and primary sources. Secondary or tertiary sources are needed to establish the topic's notability and avoid novel interpretations of primary sources." I think you can easily fix this and still get the DYK, but you will need to add new sources and some (not a lot) new material. I realize you may not like these sources, so take your time looking for news articles, books, and journal articles. I will provide a few examples of some potential sources here: [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]. Please ping me when you've added additional secondary sources. They could easily replace some of the primary ones you are currently using, so you wouldn't have to change much content around, but I suspect you will need to add more content because the department has been the subject of attacks from the right. While we don't have to frame it from the POV of the attackers, you do need to at least acknowledge some measure of dispute or controversy if one exists. In other words, we aren't stenographers, we are more like archivists, and without the secondary source coverage, we are only getting an official, singular viewpoint from the primary sources, which doesn't give us a balanced treatment. • This is not a review, but I have a few comments about the hook. It's a good one, but you'd better cite to the DOI as a scholarly paper, because we otherwise can't be sure of the kibd of source we are dealing with. Secondly, the paper says that The year 2001 marked the high tide of soft porn production, when out of the 89 films released, 57 were soft-porn sizzlers, but this is 64% and not "more than 70%". I also modified the hook so that the "Malayalam cinema" wikilink is less WP:EASTEREGG-like and closer to what a reader will expect to click. i declare that i am not aware of having any conflict of interest with dalí atomicus.
i'm not sure if a descriptive caption would be better than one that simply stated the name of the work, so have provided a few alternatives for discussion.
i did not provide links to the articles on the artists as that seems to be the current practice at dyk.
the unretouched version appears to be in the public domain, as noted by the library of congress here. i believe the final version is too, as it was printed in life with a copyright notice ("© 1948 PHILIPPE HALSMAN"), and i found no evidence here that halsman renewed the copyright.
i am admittedly still working on the article, but wanted to nominate it before the deadline passed.

  • I shall have a look. Schwede66 00:02, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Created seven days ago and nominated today, i.e. that's just on time. Neutral. Suitably referenced. Earwig is clean. The problem is that the article is a stub with hardly any prose (385 B) and a very long off the 1,500 B that is set as the minimum for DYK eligibility. Hence, short of a major expansion, this nomination will have to be rejected. The other problem is that the hook fact does not appear in the article! Schwede66 00:09, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
apologies, Schwede66! i've already done the research to expand the article to the appropriate length, but am still typing it up. i just wanted to nominate the article before the deadline, as i mentioned above. (i admittedly ended up spending entirely too much time researching whether halsman renewed the copyright.) i should have the article properly expanded within a day, at which point it should include the hook fact. is that alright? dying (talk) 01:01, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Sure; that'll be fine. I suppose I reviewed it "as is". Schwede66 01:05, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Schwede66, i have now expanded the article. please let me know if you encounter any issues. thanks for your patience! dying (talk) 23:57, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • What a great article. Thoroughly enjoyed reading that one! Earwig appears to be down. Otherwise, the article now passes all the required checks. A minor content issue is that the two photos are described as being side-by-side, but on any of the three screens that I've checked (cellphone, laptop, big screen), they are on top of one another – please fix the caption. QPQ has been done. Hook is certainly interesting and the hook fact is referenced. The other snag is that the main photo is currently up for deletion; I suggest we park this until that issue has resolved itself as it's certainly a strong contender for a lead hook. Schwede66 02:29, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
thanks, Schwede66! i'm glad you enjoyed reading it. yes, i agree that the nomination should be put on hold due to the deletion discussion.
also, thanks for pointing out the caption issue! i completely forgot about the possibility that one photo could appear above the other instead of next to it. i was trying to figure out if replacing "(left)" with "(left or top)" would be appropriate when i realized that there was actually no need to state that the photos were juxtaposed to allow for easy comparison, as this should be self-evident.
i believe i've now reformatted the gallery so that it is platform independent. please let me know if this is not the case. dying (talk) 15:59, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I remember looking into whether Virtue could have an article a couple years ago -- interesting to see she does now! I'm concerned, though, about the blog source (One Grounded Angel) in a BLP. The WRSP is also a little iffy (it's CESNUR-affiliated), though my source highlighter is probably wrong to call it red -- RSN discussion is inconclusive and leans that both it and CESNUR being listed as red is wrong. The hook could use some copyediting ("born-again Christian" is better rendered that way), and the article jumps around somewhat in a difficult-to-follow way; there's a rapid leap from her being raised Christian and attending a nominally Christian university, to her many years as a New Age author, with no explanation of the series of events here. Can anything be filled in? Vaticidalprophet 10:12, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Edwardx, just a reminder of this. I've been thinking about the article's discussion of her books too -- it's a bit sparse, even for DYK. Virtue was a big deal, and a fair amount of her work has had semi-mainstream impact (e.g. the concept of angel numbers, which have a lot of mainstream coverage these days). A QPQ is also still needed. Vaticidalprophet 18:15, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • This isn't strictly a review of the article's eligibility for DYK, but rather to point out the elephant in the room suitably of this article to appear on the front page. The subject of the article is, according to the categories, a "song about criminals" and a "song about sexual assault", and as such we must exercise extreme caution approaching this topic before even thinking about featuring it on the main page for the world to see. I am not convinced that the current article sufficiently addresses an important topic regarding the reception of the song, that is, to speak plainly, the tension between the popularity of this viral hit and the awkwardness of its subject matter now broken out of its subcultural circles. There are reliable sources that addresses this issue that were not incorporated into this article, a partial translation of the Japanese Wikipedia article, for example, those that describe the controversies surrounding select companies and celebrities who ill-advisedly chose to feature the song on their social media. _dk (talk) 07:15, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Not a full review, but this hook must be shortened because it's 223 characters long; the absolute maximum length for a single-article hook is 200 characters. We can reduce the hook to 191 characters by removing "(otherwise called III Æthelred)" (which doesn't need to be bold anyway). The character limit notwithstanding, this parenthetical actually makes the hook more unwieldy to read and doesn't add much to the interestingness of the hook. Overall: Article was moved to mainspace within 7 days of nomination. 1800 characters of prose. Earwig picked up 1% of copyright violation, making it unlikely. QPQ done. I'm not entirely sure about the image used; it's an unofficial creation using a free image of a firefighter, but it does illustrate an example. The first paragraph is mostly unsourced, unless the one source at the end of the paragraph is supposed to encompass it. • @Lullabying: The the website says that Pet Age is a company focusing on the animal "supply, merchandising, and service market" and that it "explores current trends", so my assumption would be that it is aware of market trends. Since the majority of paper calendars seem to feature animals, I assume that they are aware of their main competition (being beefcake calendars) and their impact on the market. Considering the fact that the Australian calendar features firefigthers as well as animals, it falls within their purview as well. Di (they-them) (talk) 09:20, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I'll take a look. Schwede66 00:17, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • First obvious problem is that this article is a direct translation of the German version without that being declared. With that declaration missing, it is technically a copyright violation. WP:TFOLWP explains what must be done. Beyond that, there is an some tidy-up necessary, as German text appears and referencing mistakes show up. Referencing is not up to scratch; what's unreferenced in the German edition isn't referenced here either. With the unreferenced paragraph removed, the article is just a touch over 1500 bytes of readable prose, i.e. only just long enough. The article was created four days ago, i.e. it's new. It's neutral. While I don't doubt that the painting is indeed Hitler's (as can be seen by his signature) and 1912 is stated on the painting, I'm not sure whether we can call the source a WP:RS; could others who know more about picryl.com or GetArchive please comment? My hunch is that it should be ok and I note that the painting is also listed in the article paintings by Adolf Hitler. The hook is certainly interesting and would do rather well, with or without being the lead hook. Earwig, of both the English and German versions, is clean. The nominator has no DYK credits, hence is QPQ-exempt. Schwede66 01:17, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

ALT 1: ... that one of the lessons in Conversations about Important Things proposed telling children as young as nine that Russia was "more precious" than life, and that it was "not scary" to die for Russia? Sources: see original submission
Although the passage got a lot of coverage, I also heard something about the lessons not actually being legal because of some law that prohibits political propaganda in schools, but I think I need a better source than https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/03/20/putin-russia-schools-ukraine. --Minoa (talk) 12:31, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My point is that it's likely that no children were actually taught this. The CS Monitor explicitly says that the Ministry of Education has revised the course material to respond to parents’ objections, to remove ... the honorable nature of dying for Russia. So a more NPOV version would be "... that following a controversy it was decided not to tell children that it's honorable to die for Russia.
So maybe it's better to use something that actually happened, for example
ALT2 "... that Conversations about Important Things were seen as an attempt to introduce propaganda to school and were unpopular with many teachers and parents"
ALT3 "... that Russian parents who didn't want their children to attend Conversations about Important Things got into trouble"
I realise that it's less eye-catching, but I think it's better to mention things that did happen. Just to be clear, I cannot approve this submission since I've offered my own alternatives, someone will review it - it may take some time. Alaexis¿question? 19:48, 17 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • The article fails the WP:DYKNEW criterion, because it was created more than seven days ago on 14 September 2023 and not expanded fivefold in the last seven days before this DYK nomination (or otherwise eligible). – Editør (talk)
I missed that the article was moved from the Draft namespace on 16 October 2023, which means that the article is eligible, I will continue my review of this nomination and post it here soon. – Editør (talk) 11:57, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • The boldlinked article is new enough and long enough. I believe that the lead section of the boldlinked article is repetitive and goes into too much detail, I think that it could be reduced to two or three paragraphs, so this should probably be improved first, but otherwise the article has no apparent major issues. The hook is cited and supported by the source. And the QPQ has been done. I propose ALT1 with a different wording of the hook, to include an explicit reference to the massacre to better explain the context and significance of the hook and to include the title of the book that this nomination is about. – Editør (talk) 13:10, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • ALT1: ... that a year before the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, students at Columbine High School joked that their school would be next for a mass shooting according to the book No Easy Answers?
      • Thanks for the review. I'll trim the lead a little, though I don't see it going to 2-3 paragraphs -- there's four disparate things to cover here -- and at DYK level this isn't an eligibility issue anyway. (I agree it's a bit overlong, though, so I'm doing so nonetheless.) I was intentionally avoiding the book title as the bold link, because the fact Brown was specifically Harris and Klebold's friend is the big claim here and the thing worth bolding. (Having promoted a few hundred DYK hooks, I'm confident a hook that didn't bold that part would redirect most views to the Columbine massacre rather than to the bold article.) How do you feel about...
      • I think this seems like a decent compromise. Vaticidalprophet 17:47, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Or even, while we're here...

Vaticidalprophet 17:48, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The word 'next' doesn't require quotation marks in the hook, since you're paraphrasing and it doesn't require emphasis. I think you shouldn't assume that the reader is familiar with the Columbine High School massacre, so the connections between the different elements of the hook (like students, school, massacre, and book) should be made explicit. What about:
But I also see your point about the book and clicking on the link. Can you come up with an entirely different hook that puts the book front and center? – Editør (talk) 19:31, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! Vati asked me to chime in here, although he doesn't know what I'm going to say as I write this. The lead of Columbine High School massacre says that it's most commonly referred to as "Columbine", so I think we're good on that front – plus, a short hook with the boldlink close to the front is best. I think ALT3 is the best we've got so far – the book title doesn't really add that much to the hook, and if we add it, we have to add the context in separately. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 02:01, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yeah, I asked Leek for a neutral third option because I wasn't sure where this was going/how best to resolve it. Thanks for both your thoughts so far. (I also think from the performance of the most recent hook to mention Columbine that it's a subject we can reasonably assume some pre-knowledge of.) Vaticidalprophet 02:12, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The use of "Columbine" for the massacre in the article on the massacre is unsourced, but it was not recently added so I see no immediate problem here. I'm passing the hook of ALT3 without the unnecessary quotation marks, which is ALT5. – Editør (talk) 08:17, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

To reviewers: This may look daunting, but it's as simple as any other nomination. Pick one article from the box below, place a note in the large table in the column 'Review status' that you are reviewing that one, and leave the review comments at the bottom of this nomination form. Review one at a time. The hook fact needs to be reviewed once only.
  • Reviewed: see table below
  • Comment: It's New Zealand election time, which means mass DYK nomination time also! Last time we managed a 19-article hook (see Ibrahim Omer), this time we're aiming a little higher. Special votes are still being counted, however, so we will finalise the numbers in the hook as the numbers shake out over the next couple of weeks.

We will add a table below to mark off QPQs as we go (I can't figure out how to do that on this new submission template!). As we are still sorting out some of the stubs, may I suggest people don't review anything until it has a QPQ against it? We will also likely add an image. DrThneed and I worked on a nomination statement at the same time, not knowing that we were working in parallel. Let me post what I wrote; this also addresses the issue raised by Kiwichris. One of the things I did is organise a table with all new MPs plus sources for that; I come to 38 40 new MPs.Reply[reply]

We've had a general election in New Zealand and just like in 2011 and 2020, we'd like to make a mass-nomination for some of the new bios of incoming members of parliament. I don't think we made similar nominations after the 2014 and 2017 elections. The election results aren't final yet and some things will change. However, it'll no doubt take a wee while to look through these nominations and therefore, I propose that we take our time and wait for the final results to come in on 3 November, adjust the nomination to suit, and then run this on the main page. I shall also outline how the electoral system works, how that in turn changes the results once the final votes come in. That's important to understand for verifying the hook facts.

We use a mixed-member proportional representation (MMP) system in New Zealand. The overall composition of parliament is determined by the party vote, where party lists are used to achieve proportionality. The other way of getting into parliament is to win an electorate outright. Some electorate votes are incredibly close (there are seven electorates where the difference in vote between the preliminary winner and the second-placed candidate are below 500 votes, with something like 33,000 votes being cast per electorate and 20% of the vote not having been included yet in the preliminary results). Those electorate results are thus uncertain. And the overall composition may change, with the special votes generally favouring the left block. There has always been change for as long as we've had MMP between preliminary and final results, and that won't be any different this time either.

In terms of the hook facts, what will change is:

  • how many new MPs we get, and
  • who they will be

What we nominate now is based on the preliminary results. I'll indicate below whether it's a close race and the candidate isn't 100% confirmed. That could be because the electorate vote is close, or the candidate is the lowest-ranked one on the list who got in. The definition that we use for "new MP" is someone who has not been in parliament before (as opposed to someone who has but wasn't there during the last term).

At this point, we have 38 39 new MPs. That is referenced in four articles by The Spinoff:

I've prepared a couple of tables but as hard as I try, I can't get them to display here. Find those tables in my sandbox. Oh, and I've currently got 7 QPQ in credit; happy to chip them in. But let us first get that table right (30 vs 39 new MPs). Schwede66 03:35, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sorry, slight brain fart. Yes, 38 40 new MPs, but 8 of those had articles already. That means that up to 31 32 bios are eligible. My table identifies "who is new in parliament" and "who is new to Wikipedia". Schwede66 03:42, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

General discussion

Comment: Perhaps this is WP:TOO SOON for some of these MPs-elecect? Vanessa Weenink has just an 83 vote lead prior to specials, Blair Cameron has just 54 and Angee Nicholas only 30. None of them are likely to be elected off the list either. Perhaps the DYK nomination could be put under the name of an MP more certain of being elected such as Tom Rutherford whose provisional majority is 13,182 votes? Kiwichris (talk) 01:12, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I will say (while looking to review a couple of these soon) that we have a really bad shortage at DYKNA right now, and it would be better for the project's functioning to do some fresh reviews and use the banked credits later when we're not running at 40–50 approved hooks for weeks on end. Vaticidalprophet 08:55, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And of those who are both new to parliament and new to Wikipedia, four of them have photos. My suggestion is that we produce a collage of those four, just as we produced a collage of the 9 in 2020 who we had photos for:

Two of the four articles are as yet short of 1500 bytes of readable prose, but we'll fix that. Would someone with the right software be so kind to produce a collage of those four? Schwede66 03:51, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

All four of those photo articles are DYK-ready by now. I've found another new MP; Rima Nakhle is listed in the source but I somehow skipped her when compiling the new MPs into a spreadsheet. Comparing my amended list (32 new MPs) against the 31 that have been nominated here, I see that Todd Stephenson is missing from the nomination. Schwede66 00:27, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • This is not a review but more of a comment. I do appreciate the hard work that you and many editors here have done to all of these articles. However, the DYK guidelines do say that hooks should be interesting to a broad audience, and more importantly, the hooks themselves should be about information about the subject that can be perceived as being unusual or interesting by general audiences. That is, the hook tells something about them that others might find interesting. I'm not really sure if a hook that says that 30+ people from such-and-such party were elected to Parliament meets the spirit of the criterion.
I understand the idea behind the hook, about wanting to break last election's records. I really do. I also appreciate the efforts being done here and I think it's great that all these articles have been written. However, I wonder if this is a case where quality would be better than quantity. As in, instead of having all these names being featured at once on DYK, which is cool but perhaps going against the spirit of the guidelines, it might be better to focus on just a few of these MPs and come up with really interesting or really catchy individual hooks about them.
Perhaps it's also a case of not wanting systemic bias. After all, readers may wonder "why does New Zealand get this treatment but not other countries? What makes New Zealand so special to warrant such a hook? How about a multi-person hook about the US? The UK? Australia? India? Nigeria? etc."
Of course, this is just my opinion, and if consensus states that this hook can go on in its current form, perhaps under WP:IAR, I won't get in the way. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 02:52, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So, to repeat my WT:DYK take in a centralized spot – I think the "quarter new" and "x many parties" variants are workable. I am skeptical about mass-hooks by default, but when the work to arrange one is already so far into completion, I think it's for the better to let it be the case. I also note we have had a lot of New Zealand hooks lately, and a single hook for thirty NZ politicians is going to be markedly less inclined to contribute to visible overrepresentation than tons of hooks for individual NZ politicians (which introduces other issues, like the fact you can't really put multiple politicians from the same country in one set). I am strongly inclined to recommend that next election runs individual hooks, but we're already here. I'm willing to review a handful of these, though emphatically not the whole set of thirty (there's more than enough people at DYK who could use the QPQ credits, anyway). Vaticidalprophet 08:18, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I will also say, though, that all the past-length-minimum articles I've looked at have a viable individual hook (not always the best hook ever that'd tear up the charts, but something viable). It's possible to just split them out in this existing nomination with their existing QPQs, though this does cause some trickiness with PSHAW when promoting (you have to do it manually, so far as I can tell). Vaticidalprophet 09:26, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
One concern I do have is that the combined hook may have so many names involved that not all of them will benefit from Main Page featuring since I doubt our readers will all want to click on every single name and learn about them, and there's a concern that the featuring may backfire and cause each individual article to get less readership than what would normally be expected under a multi-hook. This could be an argument in favor of the best options being split off into separate individual hooks, with perhaps only the "not-so viable" ones being part of a multi-hook. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:36, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DrThneed, Schwede66, I've been thinking about this. This is just playing with ideas, but I agree with NLH, more or less, that megahooks of this sort are tricky. I've also read all the articles in the set, and noticed the 1500+ character ones that are reasonably comfortably winners all have viable standalone hooks, some good enough it'd really be a shame to put them in a multi. Given we already have QPQs sorted for almost all that subset, it is possible to just break them out within this nomination, if that's a thing there's any enthusiasm for. There's obviously a lot of articles still to work on, and there might be good hooks that emerge for those. Not all these hooks are the-best-ever, but they're all at least "minimum viable hooks" and some are genuinely great.

These are absolutely just playing-with-ideas, not at all a hard suggestion, not at all a statement that a multihook isn't viable. But, did you know...

  • ... that New Zealand politician Reuben Davidson (pictured) is a former children's television producer?
  • ... that Scott Willis (pictured) helped build New Zealand's first climate-safe house?
  • ... that the Māori environmental scientist Darleen Tana (pictured) speaks Flemish and French?
  • ... that New Zealand politician Tom Rutherford is a firefighter and hockey umpire?
  • ... that when he was in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, future politician Tim Costley starred in a YouTube video that joked about having sex with sheep?
  • ... that despite being active in politics, Laura Trask has almost no social media presence?
  • ... that New Zealand politician Hamish Campbell is a cancer researcher and runs a flower delivery business?
  • ... that Jamie Arbuckle started a farmer's market after his application for a different market was rejected under suspicions he didn't grow his own asparagus?
  • ... that when she was elected to the New Zealand parliament, Catherine Wedd defeated her former coworker at a marketing company?
  • ... that Ryan Hamilton was the only member of the Hamilton City Council to vote against requiring a COVID-19 vaccination certificate to enter council facilities?
  • ... that Suze Redmayne is the first female Member of Parliament for the New Zealand electorate of Rangitīkei?
  • ... that New Zealand politician Rima Nakhle campaigned for setting up military academies for youth offenders?
  • ... that Tākuta Ferris's win in the 2023 New Zealand general election was one of that election's biggest surprises?
  • ... that Casey Costello was the first woman to be vice president of the New Zealand Police Association?
  • ... that Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, aged 21, is the youngest Member of Parliament in New Zealand since 1853?
  • ... that New Zealand politician Cameron Luxton compared a member of the House of Representatives to Marie Antoinette?

Campbell needs a QPQ, and Costley's isn't quite in the article yet (it's in the source, but the article is very unclear on what the video was). Otherwise, they're all eligible hooks. Some of them – Costley, Campbell, Maipi-Clarke, Luxton, Arbuckle, probably Davidson/Rutherford/Trask – are good enough it really stands out to me that we aren't running them. I'm not saying the multihook doesn't work, but, playing around with ideas, I think there are a lot of paths forward both running a multihook and running individual hooks, and they have their pros and cons. Vaticidalprophet 11:49, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can't speak for everyone in the team, but I am not interested in breaking up this hook into individual noms. Vaticidalprophet you've identified some great potential hooks above, but for me the purpose of being involved in the multihook was the fun of it, the fact that it is by virtue of its size something out of the ordinary, and that it involves a whole bunch of editors in both prepping and moving the bios on election night and then getting them ready for DYK. The last NZ election multihook was only my seond ever DYK nomination, and it was somewhat of a baptism of fire. But it was really fun, and the experience of prepping the bios and reviewing and working together to sort out problems was positive and I stayed involved in DYK afterwards when I otherwise might not have. I don't see nominating 30 individual politician bios as fun in the same way, and I suspect it would be less likely to get interest from other NZ editors not already involved in DYK. Another aspect that puts me off is because to avoid having more than one in a set they'd end up so spread out that I'd be having to think about politican bios for weeks and weeks. No thanks! DrThneed (talk) 22:27, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand the eagerness to do the multihook, but the way I see it, there are a few issues with the multihook, some brought up by me and others by Vaticidalprophet:
  1. According to the DYK criteria, hooks need to be perceived as unusual or interesting to people without special knowledge. That means, a hook should encourage readers to read more about a subject: that's why they're called hooks. The currently written hook, assuming it was just a single article hook that said "Did you know that [person] was elected to the New Zealand Parliament?", isn't really going to fly by DYK standards.
  2. About a year or two ago, there was an RfC regarding the interest criterion for DYK. The result was a tightening of the rules, so unlike before where hooks had to be "interesting to a broad audience", a criterion that almost no one could agree on its meaning, now hooks need to basically appeal to people without specialist knowledge. A hook including so many bolded links might technically be considered interesting to many, but it arguably violates the spirit of the criterion, which was intended to make sure that hooks about subjects highlight something about them that would interest even non-specialists.
  3. There's a concern that having so many names in a hook might backfire in terms of readership. That is, there are so many names involved that readers may be impressed but less willing to actually look up every name in the hook. Sure, that doesn't mean they need to read everything, but that's a possibility if reader resources are being spread thin. Basically, the more names in the hook, the less that each individual article may actually be read by readers.
  4. Some of the proposals given above are actually really good in their own right and would probably do bonkers or at least do pretty well as standalone hooks. I think it would be a shame to put them to waste since I think just having a multihook where the names get a passing mention rather than their own hooks where they are a star would not give them and their careers justice.
As for the concern about spreading out, that shouldn't be much of an issue. The hooks are already provided above, you don't have to come up with your own. We're already having a biography shortage already and hooks running a month or more after approval isn't uncommon, so it's not necessarily a problem.
There could also perhaps be some form of compromise. Perhaps only the "best of the best" of the MP hooks could be split off into their own hooks, while the others could be left in the multihook. The tricky part is that a lot of Vaticidalprophet's proposals are actually pretty good and it would be a shame to leave any of them out. I'm not entirely against multihooks in general, and I think under the right circumstances they can work, but I think the current proposal goes against the spirit of the current guidelines, particularly the ones about interest to a broad audience. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 23:28, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Echoing my comments at WT:DYK here so everything is in one place, I believe the best course of action would be to try and tweak the multihook so it meets the interesting criterion. I brought up the possibility that the new MPS make up over a quarter of parliament, and that all six parties have new MPs. That said, if there is a desire to pull out individual MPs from this list into their own nomination, and if there is someone who actually wants to undertake that effort themselves, then Narutolovehinata5's suggestion should work too. I don't think there is a need to fear weeks of thinking about politicians if they are split off! Generally once approved DYKs sail off into the wind, you can let them live their lives.
While individual splits could be considered now, the final shape of the multi-hook can only take place once the real-life dust settles. Perhaps the length of vote counting is another thing that might hook people! CMD (talk) 02:11, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That might make a good compromise: some of the best of the best could have their own hooks, while the rest could remain included in a multi-hook if desired. It could be the best of both worlds, allowing those with very interesting stories to shine in their own right, while also avoiding the concerns about "flooding" DYK with New Zealand politicians by keeping some form of a multihook around and acknowledging the work and desires of those involved in wanting a multihook. For example, I'm really partial to VP's proposed hooks for Davidson Rutherford, Costley, Campbell, and Wedd and think they might do well on their own, while the others have okay-to-decent hooks but may not be as big of a loss if they were grouped under a multihook. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 02:36, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree that it could be a good compromise to pull out a few of the more interesting ones and run the rest as a multihook, if the community is agreeable. I am certainly open to rephrasing the multihook itself too, which as noted by Chipmunkdavis is likelier to be easier once the full count has been completed, and there will be new sources detailing all the new MPs and noting things like what proportion of the new parliament they make up etc.
Narutolovehinata5 suggested Davidson, Rutherford, Costley, Campbell, and Wedd as possible stand-alones. My view would be that being a volunteer firefighter/umpire isn't so unusual (at least here) and also that four out of five of those are National Party MPs, so perhaps replacing Rutherford with either Scott Willis or Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke would be better? DrThneed (talk) 21:44, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm also open to running say a handful of articles standalone if that's what's needed to get the multi-hook over the line. I suggest, however, that the multi-hook would go well with a collage of new MPs. We have exactly four images, and the only good collage (that I can think of) is a 2x2 arrangement. Therefore, the four pictured articles cannot be standalone DYK nominations; that means that Scott Willis is out. Schwede66 22:46, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Oops sorry Schwede66 I forgot about our paucity of photos this year (not for want of trying). So yes Willis needs to stay in the multihook. Hana would still be a good option to pull out though, being the youngest in 170 years (and female and Māori) is pretty cool! DrThneed (talk) 23:17, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And only the second-youngest ever because the youngest cheated! James Stuart-Wortley got his solicitor to confirm that he was 21 and thus eligible to be elected. It only came out later that they had lied, and he was 20 years and 7 months at the time of the election, thus not eligible to even stand under the rules back then. This isn't even stated in Stuart-Wortley's bio. Schwede66 23:35, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In the case of the firefighter thing, Wikipedia has a broad, global audience, so they might not even know that New Zealand politicians often have or had side gigs, so regardless of how common it is they might still find it unusual. I don't necessarily think the party issue is going to be a problem because what happened was proposing based on hooks rather than party, and so if one party ends up being more represented, it wasn't on purpose and was more of a side-effect of the overall effort rather than an intentional effort to promote one party over the other. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:02, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Volunteer firefighting is just a common thing in rural communities, as without it there is no fire service. And it isn't a sidegig of an MP as such, there's no way he would be able to keep that up now he's in Parliament and has to be in Wellington! But regardless, if we can build a hook for Hana around her being the youngest legal/non-lying NZ MP ever (sources permitting) that would have to be more interesting, surely? DrThneed (talk) 00:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
My view is that things are interesting either because of their content or their style. Here, like with Template:Did you know nominations/That, playing with the expected form of a hook is interesting. WP:DYKINT places no restriction on interestingness to content. Urve (talk) 09:42, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I second this sentiment. I rarely click through DYKs on the main page, but seeing the sea of blue with last year's multihook definitely sent me down a rabbit hole of NZ politics. I think this is an excellent tradition and drives participation that otherwise may not happen. Unique novelties like this are what drive editor retention and recruitment, in my opinion. However, I do think that a formal, centralized discussion on the topic could be fruitful in the future. Fritzmann (message me) 21:55, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

In any case, there's been some discussion at WT:DYK saying that if the multihook is to be accepted (and right now, consensus on whether to go ahead with it is ongoing), then it would probably need to be revised so that it would be interesting in its own right. That is, ALT0 might not be possible, but a different formulation like focusing on how at least a quarter of the MPs are new, might be possible. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 11:47, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Narutolovehinata5, please see ALT1 above. Schwede66 17:54, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That could work if consensus determines that the multihook can go ahead, though personally I'd still prefer the compromise option. Though I suppose discussion can continue on that front as well: which articles to go individual and which ones will remain in the multihook. The thing that urgently needs to be discussed right now, I think, is to be if the multihook should go ahead in the first place. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:47, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Are we going with this compromise (running up to say 5 articles standalone; the rest as a multi-hook)? I'm asking because I managed to source what happened in 1853. This would offer us the following standalone hook, which I reckon is pretty cool: Schwede66 01:59, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
ALT(Maipi-Clarke) ... that if James Stuart-Wortley had not falsified his age for the 1853 general election, Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke would now be New Zealand's youngest-ever member of parliament?
That sounds good, but I'd like to hear DrThneed's thought on what articles she is willing to allow being standalone hooks before we discuss which hooks will be standalone and which ones will remain in the multihook. There doesn't seem to be much consensus really in favor or against the multihook running at all, but given the lack of opposition I'd say that that's probably a sign of allowing at least some kind of multihook to push through. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:02, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think pulling out five individuals is a reasonable compromise, and one that both Schwede66 and I are happy with - it still leaves us with a decent-size multihook, but allows a few of the more interesting bios to shine, without overwhelming DYK sets with NZ politicians. My opinion is that the best individual hooks are Davidson, Costley, Campbell, Wedd, and Schwede's Maipi-Clarke hook above. If that seems like a good path forward, then some suggestions on the mechanics of it would be appreciated! Would I just make fresh nominations for the individual articles, with a reference back to the multihook as being the actual date of nomination? DrThneed (talk) 20:12, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Regarding the mechanics, I would think:

  • strike those articles from this nomination
  • remove the relevant credits
  • make individual nominations for those bios, with a link back to here to demonstrate that we nominated in time
  • move the QPQs across as they stand

That should cover it all, I think. Unless somebody can think of other aspects. Just one issue – we can't use Reuben Davidson as a standalone nomination as he's one of the four bios where we have a photo. Schwede66 22:59, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh for heavens sakes, that's the second time I've put one with an image in the list! Gah. Alright, so Costley, Campbell, Wedd, Maipi-Clarke and one other...I note Narutolovehinata5 liked Rutherford, I think Arbuckle or Trask might be better but no strong feelings, Vaticidalprophet you came up with these individual hooks, do you have a preference for a fifth? DrThneed (talk) 23:29, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think Trask can probably stay in the multihook. The hook is just fine but it's not a standout hook like the other proposals. Is five the agreed number, or can the number change further? I think five is a minimum but perhaps as many as seven could be possible depending on if there are any additional standouts. Though if there's just a desire for a "best-of-the-best", five is fine. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 00:07, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I enjoy both Arbuckle and Trask's hook and would prefer to see both of them if possible. (I think Rutherford is fairly remarkable to people not from rural NZ. Volunteer firefighters are common enough in rural Aus too, but most people here aren't rural, so it's a distant concept even to me.) Vaticidalprophet 00:23, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No I don't think either Schwede66 or I want to take out more than 5 (to avoid repetition, that's for all the reasons given above in defence of the multihook! Plus the fact that people have donated QPQs and put effort into expanding bios for a multihook, which they wouldn't necessarily do for individual ones.). So we are discussing which ones rather than how many. Seeing as you're both keen on Rutherford that looks like Campbell, Costley, Wedd, Maipi-Clarke and Rutherford to me. Schwede66 do you want to confirm you're happy with that? DrThneed (talk) 04:24, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm fine with 5 individual nominations but wouldn't want to see any more than that. Like DrThneed, I'm rather lukewarm about the volunteer firefighter but if that spins the wheels of people outside of Oceania, then so be it. Any hook with "sex" in it will do famously well, and "sex with sheep" will go off the scale, so that's all good. I predict that 80% of Australian readers will click on that one. DrThneed, before we do individual nominations, can we have a look at credits for those together? Schwede66 04:54, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's fair. With regards to the five individual hooks, are you fine with Vaticidalprophet's proposals or do you have any other ideas? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 09:04, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I really don't mind beyond none of the four photo bios, and I would really like to feature Maipi-Clarke. Schwede66 09:13, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think the question was more are we happy with the hooks as proposed or do we have other ideas? I think it might be easiest if I split them and then anyone with alternative hooks to suggest can discuss them on the individual noms. (Will split tomorrow, am currently working through to make sure I have the page creation/contribution credits accurate for the individuals and the remaining multihook). DrThneed (talk) 09:22, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Maipi-Clarke has now been nominated individually. I've struck things where appropriate, removed her from ALT1, and removed credits. Schwede66 12:05, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

DrThneed has nominated the other four individual nominations:

We should thus be all good. Let the review of the remaining bios start. Thanks to all who have commented and moved this along. Schwede66 00:16, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Terminology is a little tricky here, on account of the vagaries of the nonfiction publishing world. "Hired to write it" would be a work-for-hire, which is a very different thing, and "learned they would be the writers" at least gestures in a similar direction -- something for which the premise was decided by a third party. I'm not sure "learned their offer to write it was accepted" is less clunky. Vaticidalprophet 00:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Great hook! Long enough, created within the window, generally seems like a fine article and QPQ done. Source is provided but I can't immediately verify the "former slave" part (I appreciate that "Mamluk" usually implies it, but needs spelling out to avoid being WP:OR), though the "governor of Baghdad" part is no issue. Could you provide a direct quote? UndercoverClassicist T·C 18:11, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well this is super embarrassing because it isn't very specific. This is pages 128-129 under Mamluk Dynasty:

Hassan Pasha and Ahmad Pasha, however, are primarily remembered for a longer-lasting development that marked their tenure in power. As inheritors of a patrimonial Ottoman tradition that emphasized the conversion of Christian youths from the southern Caucus, who were either captured in battle or sold to Ottoman commanders by their kinfolk, Hassan Pasha and Ahmad Pasha began to import young Georgian boys by the hundreds to Baghdad to reproduce the same imperial system. These "slaves to the sultan," later called mamluk or mamalik (literally "owned," in Arabic) were taught to read and write in several languages, follow the Islamic religion, and train in martial arts at palace schools. They staffed the various regiments, households and extended family networks of important army commanders, the first being Hassan Pasha and Ahmad Pasha themselves.

Pinging @Ayham4002: as I don't have access to the other source tagged in the article: Bosworth's Historic Cities of the Islamic World. I went ahead and removed that from the article. May I suggest an alt?

Hm: concept is good but the hook itself needs some work. Firstly, I don't think we can have purchased without some sort of context ("as a slave"), for example. The hook also rambles a bit, in my very subjective view. How about something like:
  • ALT2: ...that a slave of Ḥassan Pasha, governor of Baghdad, married Hassan's granddaughter and became governor of the same city?
I wonder whether Sulaiman's name harms more than it helps, given that the hook is about Hassan.
Separately, the article has a reference to Hassan's slave origin which I also can't verify from the provided source. I've added a template to request a direct quotation: if we now think it's more likely that Hassan only purchased slaves, as opposed to being one, we should remove that detail.

UndercoverClassicist T·C 12:15, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes! I like ALT2 much better. I did remove all references to Hassan being a slave pending that last source. Annwfwn (talk) 12:23, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There's a couple of maintenance tags outstanding in the article (a clarification and a CN). Could you fix them before we approve? UndercoverClassicist T·C 12:28, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ayham4002 (talk) 12:55, 20 October 2023 (UTC) Forgive me for the late reply but yes I like ALT2 much better too! As for Hassan Pasha being a slave in Bosworth's Historic Cities of the Islamic World page 43 says: Reply[reply]

Hasan Pasha, who was brought up in the Ottoman slave household, wanted to follow its example; he established houses and initiated the training of Circassian and Georgian Mamluks and the sons of local magnates in them.

So I'm pretty sure that confirms it to some extent.

Thank you! I'm off to work so I'll be stepping away from Wikipedia for now. I'll check in later. Annwfwn (talk) 13:22, 20 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • welcome to dyk, dxneo! i am not sure if you are already aware, but this project focuses on showcasing new articles and recently improved articles, as explained at wp:dyk. the guidelines at wp:dyknew explain that a nominated article should have been, within the last seven days, either created in article space, expanded at least fivefold, or promoted to good article status.
unfortunately, this article does not appear to currently be eligible for an appearance at dyk, as it was first created in 2012, and the only edits to the article in the last week were made to remove an unreliable source and add a reliable one. expanding the article fivefold seems rather difficult, given the current length of the article. is that something you would be interested in doing? alternatively, you could try nominating the article for good article status. dying (talk) 22:59, 18 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Heartfox: Not a review, but I have to say this article feels very one-sided in favor of Carey—with Lopez not quoted even once. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a hit piece, but it feels weird not to mention her side of the story. Did she have anything to say about the rivalry or the meme, or has she maintained radio silence over it? Even if it's the latter, I think that bears mentioning in the article. DigitalIceAge (talk) 03:48, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Thank you for the comments. It was not my intention to make it seem one-sided at all, and I don't think it is. The article mentions that the rivalry was formed by the media, and gives two sides of interpreting the phrase. Lopez is not singled out for her specific actions in any way. It is more about Carey's former record label and ex-husband's alleged actions, and Lopez was caught in the middle. I do understand your point of view and I will incorporate more context later today when I have more time. Heartfox (talk) 13:48, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
      • No problem. It's an interesting and well-cited article with a strong DYK hook otherwise, and I appreciate the commitment to adding balance. DigitalIceAge (talk) 17:05, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • Hello Juustila. I'm not the reviewer, just someone passing by. I don't think they meant the length of the hook itself, but the article. It currently sits at about 1000 characters. To be eligible for DYK, the article needs to be contain least 1500 characters of text (see WP:DYKLEN). This can probably be done fairly easily by just adding a plot section. That aside, I personally prefer the first hook, but I'll leave which one to promote up to the reviewer. ArcticSeeress (talk) 10:43, 21 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks! I've added the QPQ. Artem.G (talk) 13:48, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
... Earwig's copyvio <20%, QPQ provided, hooks are in article and followed by citations to references containing hook facts. The organ is known as Henry... any chance of a hookier hook please, otherwise will tick the above? BTW.. I enjoyed reading the article. Image is clear and free. Angelito de Canal 13

  • ... that the Angelito de Canal 13 led to its namesake television network becoming known in Chile as the "little angel's channel"? Source: "Es por esta caricatura que al [canal] 13 se le conoció durante años como el 'canal del angelito'. (It was because of that cartoon that [channel] 13 became known during those years as the 'little angel's channel'.)" [29]
    • ALT1: ... that the Angelito de Canal 13, the mascot of the Chilean namesake television network, was inspired by its creator's son? (The mischief of a two-year-old boy named Christian gave birth to the cartoons of the 'Angelito' which brightens up the programs of Channel 13. That's how we were told by the daddies of this funny 'spot' … Christian, the flesh-and-blood protagonist of the adventures of the Catholic Channel’s angel, is the son of the twenty-nine-year-old artist Enrique Bustamante.)" General: Article is new enough and long enough

Policy compliance:

Hook eligibility:

  • Cited: Green tickY
  • Interesting: Green tickY
  • Other problems: Green tickY

QPQ: Red XN - Not done
Overall: Article was nominated within 7 days of creation. Earwig picked up an unlikely violation of 3.8%. Article has some grammatical errors (i.e. Rob started growing berries in 2001, he was previously an investment banker. where the comma should be a semi-colon). Some info may be considered promotional, such as the new packaging and the part where they were said to have won "numerous awards" about the packaging but it is unclear as to what awards they won. QPQ is also pending. lullabying (talk) 03:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Lullabying: I agree with your sentiment. I could not find what these awards were, and the source was an interview so I've removed it. Do you think it's neutral now? It includes a few negatives (eg fines, possibly misleading packaging) so I would assume it is neutral. I've made a bit of a copyedit but I am very bad at writing. —Panamitsu (talk) 03:39, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Special occasion holding area[edit]

The holding area is near the top of the Approved page. Please only place approved templates there; do not place them below.

Do not nominate articles in this section—nominate all articles in the nominations section above, under the date on which the article was created or moved to mainspace, or the expansion began; indicate in the nomination any request for a specially timed appearance on the main page.
Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than six weeks in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the six week maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Discussion clarifying the hold criteria can be found here: [31]; discussion setting the six week limit can be found here: [32].
April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
