merchant marine officers from india in 1970[edit]

I am searching for merchant marine officer Anil Vidar Prakash

Hey there. Unfortunately, the article about the person you are searching for does not exist on Wikipedia.
If the person meets WP:N standards, you can write an article about the person. Regards. 🛧Midori No Sora♪🛪 ( ☁=☁=✈) 02:17, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Fix the pronunciation in Greek[edit]

I would like to ask to make a pronunciation in Greek to fix of Anna Benaki-Psarouda. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 14:20, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 Courtesy link: Anna Benaki-Psarouda - 57.140.16.45 (talk) 15:06, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Are you offering to provide a recorded audio pronunciation? That is complicated. However if you are comfortable with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) or you are willing to learn it, you can create an IPA pronunciation. The current article has a completely broken IPA pronunciation and we should either remove it or replace it. IPA is fairly easy to learn and you can check your work by using any of several "IPA readers" in the web, such as this IPA reader. Since I don't know Greek and I don't know the pronounciation, I cannot do it. If you do create the IPA and cannot figure out how to correct the article, then please come back here.-Arch dude (talk) 15:36, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello. Please see MOS:PRON, which recommends an IPA transcription, but does mention the possibility of an audio file, as Arch dude said, but it doesn't give much information about producing or using one. (See WP:Audio for more).
I am not very skilled in Greek, but I think something like
{{IPA|el|ana bɛnaki psaruða}}
which displays as
Greek pronunciation: [ana bɛnaki psaruða].
But I'm not sure of the precise vowels or the stress. ColinFine (talk) 16:36, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Citing art exhibition posters[edit]

Hi. I'd like to know if there is a way to cite a poster from an art exhibition. Specifically, for the YuYu Hakusho article. There is this poster from the "Togashi Yoshihiro -Puzzle-" exhibition (more photos are available here) detailing the actual serialization period of the series. The article currently just includes the cover dates of the issues where the series was published. I would appreciate any help or suggestions in this regard. Xexerss (talk) 15:59, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You can perhaps use {{cite sign}}. But the question may arise whether the poster has been reliably published: if after the exhibition is over, it is found only where individuals or organisation have chosen to keep a copy, I'm not sure if it can be said to be published. ColinFine (talk) 19:15, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for your suggestion. At the moment, I can only argue that the photos of the exhibition presented in the link I posted before can at least serve to verify the content of the poster itself. I understand that this is not ideal, but I think it is better than just citing the poster without showing what it looked like and the content it possessed. Xexerss (talk) 20:04, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Posters are clearly published documents which are widely collected, archived and studied by academics in several fields. The reliability of any given poster needs to be assessed individually. Cullen328 (talk) 04:22, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Page Deletion[edit]

Hello,

I represent Fairbanks Morse Defense. I tried to make a new page that was speedy deleted for our company.

There is already a Fairbanks Morse page for us that is live. When we try to update the information on this page the edits are removed.

What is the best way to move forward for us, should we complete a new page? If so, how should we make sure it is not deleted?

Should we make the edits to the already existing page? How do we make sure they are not removed?

Thank you

Will.Monroe FMDefense (talk) 20:22, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  1. Please link to the article you are attempting to edit. Your user account has not made any article edits and I cannot find an article for Fairbanks Morse Defense. so I cannot tell why the edits were removed.
  2. Do not create a new article for an existing subject.
  3. Since you represent the company, you have conflict of interest. Please read and follow WP:COI. Declare your conflict of interest, and request edits to the article on the article's talk page rather than making them yourself. Meters (talk) 20:32, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kim Zmeskal and the children[edit]

I just want to ask to put of personal life of Olympian Kim Zmeskal, and she have 3 children that she married Chris Burdette. 108.21.67.83 (talk) 20:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm not sure what you're asking - you yourself just added a paragraph on that subject to the article, two minutes ago. Though I'm not sure whether including the birthdates of minor, non-notable children is really appropriate. 57.140.16.45 (talk) 21:10, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Detailed personal information about non-notable minor children should be kept to a minimum, unless widely publicized by highly reliable sources based on the obvious consent of the parents. Otherwise, "notable person A married person B, and they have two children, a girl born in 2014 and a boy born in 2017" is adequate if properly referenced. Nothing more than that needs to be said. The children of notable people face enough challenges as it is, without making them easily searchable on a top ten website. Cullen328 (talk) 05:54, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to cite an already-gone IG story?[edit]

So I'm writing about AJR's "Yes I'm a Mess" music video. 3 weeks earlier, the band posted an Instagram story which hinted at the video's release. However, the video is now gone.

I found a tweet that reposted a screenshot from it.

I'm… kinda lost on how to cite the story. Baxyofh4rd (talk) 00:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Baxyofh4rd: You shouldn't. A screenshot on twitter of a deleted Instagram post is not a reliable source. and even if it wasn't deleted it would need to follow the guidelines at WP:SOCIALMEDIA. You will need to find other sources. RudolfRed (talk) 01:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What's the bot called that identifies sources?[edit]

I installed a bot/java script thing that identifies by colour the sources used under references for any wiki article (green is a reliable source, yellow is an iffy source, red is not a reliable source), but I can't recall what the official name of this "thing" is called here... A user asked me about it recently, and I can't seem to find what it is or where to install it. Help? Can anyone point me to the page for this bot? Moving a draft page to live wikipedia page[edit]

I would like to know how to move a draft page to a live wikipeadia page if I don't have the more button that have the move button? I need assistance on how to move the draft page to live please. I do not see the move button on my menu. Frontlinestrat (talk) 09:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Frontlinestrat New accounts cannot directly create articles, and must submit their drafts for review. I've now provided the information to permit you to submit the draft, on the draft itself(this is provided automatically if you use the article wizard). If you were to submit it now, though, it is not likely to be accepted, as it is highly promotional and several parts are unsourced. Please see Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 09:22, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you are connected to this person, that needs to be disclosed, see WP:COI and WP:PAID. 331dot (talk) 09:23, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Since you are evidently part of Frontline Strat, an organisation founded by Matinyarare, you must, before you do anything else, do two things:
  • Change your username to a name that does not suggest that it represents an organisation. All accounts are personal. You don't have to use your real name (I do, but many editors don't), but it needs to be your personal account, used only by you as an individual. "Joe at Frontline" would be an acceptable name.
  • Make a formal declaration on your user page of your status as a paid editor. This is mandatory, and you will be in breach of Wikipedia's terms of service if you continue to edit without doing so.
Then you will probably need to throw your existing draft away and start again, because I believe you have written it BACKWARDS.
  • First, find sources wholly unconnected with Frontline Strat or Matinyarare that talk about him (not just about the company) in some depth. Wikipedia is basically not interested in what Matinyarare or his associates say or want to say, but only in what unconnected people have published about him. Ignore anything written or published by Frontline or Matinyarare, and anything based on a press release or interview.
  • If you cannot find several such sources, you will know that he does not currently meet Wikipedia's requirements for notability, and any attempt to write an article about him will fail.
  • If you can find the sources, then you need to forget everything you know about Matinyarare and Frontline and write an article based on what the sources say - even if you think they are wrong. (Do you see why editing with a conflict of interest is difficult)?
You should probably read (and show Matinyarare) PROUD and BOSS as well. ColinFine (talk) 14:48, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

IP restricted sources[edit]

Hi, I've been unable to find what the policy is on referencing sources which are IP address restricted. Specifically: some movie articles reference reviews on Turner Classic Movies (http://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/), but TCM appears to be available only for USA/Canada IP addresses, otherwise you get a "not available" page (I am in the UK). It seems unhelpful that WP should allow geographically IP-restricted source links. Can anyone advise or point me to policy? Thanks! Tobyhoward (talk) 09:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There is no requirement that a source be easy or free to access. I'm not aware of any specific policy on geo-locked websites, but if you really wanted to verify the source material you are free to travel to the US and use the internet there to view it, just the same as you would need to travel to view a book in the Library of Congress or New York Public Library. I realize you probably don't want to do that(I wouldn't) but that's your option. 331dot (talk) 09:57, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(edit conflict) See WP:PAYWALL, specifically: "Do not reject reliable sources just because they are difficult or costly to access. Some reliable sources are not easily accessible. For example, an online source may require payment, and a print-only source may be available only through libraries. Rare historical sources may even be available only in special museum collections and archives. If you have trouble accessing a source, others may be able to do so on your behalf". Not everything is on the web, many older books for instance only exist as hard copies. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:13, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Supplemental to 331dot's reply: You can use a VPN to appear to be within the USA or Canada, it's probably cheaper than getting on an aeroplane! Martin of Sheffield (talk) 10:33, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
IP geo-locking is becoming commonplace for US news websites as well. They often say that it is because of the GDPR requirement in Europe. One possible way round this is to archive the link on the Wayback Machine or a similar service. It helps to archive the cite anyway.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:47, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Module:Age - Date format[edit]

Hello there! I wanted to ask a question at the aforementioned module's talk page but I got an edit notice suggesting I should actually ask it here or on the VP. (Not sure if we want tech-questions to be delegated here but I'm following its instructions at the moment.)

I recently imported Module:Age in my homewiki. Everything is fine but it uses the ymd format and in Albanian (my homewiki) we use the dmy format. Can someone show me in which line do I make the change for that? Thanks in advance! - Klein Muçi (talk) 11:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Klein Muçi: Hi there! If you do not receive an answer here, I suggest posting your question at Module talk:Age. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 13:26, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@GoingBatty, when starting a new topic on that page, an edit notice pops up which says Talk pages in this namespace are generally not watched by many users. Please consider visiting the Help desk or the village pump for a more prompt response. That's why Klein Muçi came here instead of posting there (as they explained above). That said, the talk page does seem to be semi-fairly-active, so a post there might actually get a response, in spite of what the edit notice says. 57.140.16.31 (talk) 13:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you - apologies to @Klein Muçi for not absorbing the first sentence before responding. GoingBatty (talk) 13:43, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
GoingBatty, no problem at all. Thank you for your interest in trying to help! — Klein Muçi (talk) 14:59, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not really obvious what you want. Does this not work at sq.wiki?
{{age in years, months and days|10 Jan 2001|20 Feb 2012}}
11 years, 1 month and 10 days
Trappist the monk (talk) 13:56, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Trappist the monk, that does but this doesn't: {{Birth date and age|28|01|1936|}}
This however does work: {{Birth date and age|1936|01|28|}}
I've said ymd above but apparently I should have said ydm. — Klein Muçi (talk) 15:04, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
{{Birth date and age|1936|01|28|}} uses positional parameters which is not YMD format. Here are en.wiki, YMD format (1936-01-28) is allowed only in certain places, yet so far as a I know, we have not felt the need to rearrange these positional parameters to something other than the rational {{Birth date and age|<year>|<month>|<day>|}} arrangement. Do you really really want to change that?
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Trappist the monk, the thing is that in the Albanian official writing style guide there is only one order of acceptable date formats and that is DMY. We have rules for different styles of it, like how to act with abbreviations, punctuation and letter-number mixing but they all need to follow the DMY order. — Klein Muçi (talk) 16:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, I got that, but parameter order is not a date format and never will be. Still, if you must, replace lines 608–619 with something that looks like this (not tested so I don't know if this change breaks something else):
	if isNamed then
		fields[1] = args.year1 or args.year
		fields[2] = args.month1 or args.month
		fields[3] = args.day1 or args.day
		fields[4] = args.year2
		fields[5] = args.month2
		fields[6] = args.day2
	else
		fields[1] = args[3]			-- year1
		fields[2] = args[2]			-- month1
		fields[3] = args[1]			-- day1
		fields[4] = args[6]			-- year2
		fields[5] = args[5]			-- month2
		fields[6] = args[4]			-- day2
	end
Trappist the monk (talk) 16:31, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Trappist the monk, ooh! Now I understand what you meant with "positional parameters". Well, fact is we may have some hundreds of articles showing errors because of that. We can of course bot-fix the problem but I suspect sq.wiki editors will mostly insist on that order intuitively even in the future so...
Thank you! I'll try it out. — Klein Muçi (talk) 23:31, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

List of My Three Sons episodes[edit]

Does anyone know why seasons 10, 11 & 12 cannot be viewed on the List of My Three Sons episodes page. They were there not long ago. The source code for the three seasons are there. I'm not sure what "Don't Close" at the end of Template:Episode table. means. There are 12 seasons, it will be a large page. Is there any way there could be two List of My Three Sons episodes pages? Maybe one with Seasons 1 - 5 and another page with seasons 6-12. It's important that these seasons be viewable. Thanks. Entercontainment (talk) 14:32, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you, Thank you. Entercontainment (talk) 13:12, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Better to split it so there are six seasons in each sublist, not five and seven. Clarityfiend (talk) 10:40, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Someone has fixed the problem. All the seasons are viewable. Thank you, thank you.
Is splitting the page still a good idea? Entercontainment (talk) 10:44, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Scriabin1 You have recently made a large addition to the article Richard Whitney (artist), which is, presumably, about you. Because of your conflict of interest you should only make edit requests on the Talk page of that article. Please use the {{edit COI}} template, which will draw your request(s) to those editors who check these requests and implement them if they meet our policies and guidelines. Dear Mike, Years ago I was invited by a member of the Wikipedia team to post a page on Wikipedia because of my success as a well known artist as well as being listed in many reference books. There was no conflict of interest at the time. It has been several years since I have updated my page and did so recently. I wish to delete some images in order to add new portraits and keep my page up to date. Scriabin1 (talk) 17:36, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello. I don't see any particular reason to delete or not to delete those images. However, unless some reliable independent sources are cited, to establish notability, I predict that the whole article will shortly be nominated for deletion.
It does ascribe a couple of opinions, to Town & Country (magazine), and FineArt Connoisseur, but those are pretty useless without proper citations (I was going to add these, but I've just searched both sites, and found only one hit, a passing mention of you as a guild member).
Please understand that an article about you must be based on what independent people have published about you, not (at all) on what you or your associates say or want to say. I have just quickly looked, and been unable to find any. If you have such independent sources, please post them (with sufficient bibliographic information to actually find them) here or on the article's talk page.
One final point: I'm not sure why you wanted to remove those images, but you do realise that your release of them under a copyleft licence is irrevocable? They may be removed from Wikipedia, but will not be removed from Commons unless a deletion request with a suitable rationale is made there. ColinFine (talk) 16:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Mr. Whitney -
I went ahead and posted six images. This took some time as I had to cross-reference those people in your gallery, with those on the portrait list and the wikipedia articles to see who had an article about them. I linked all those people back to your biography. I have a requested some people double check the copyright tag to make sure I got it right.

I also posted one landscape. If you know of other pertinent paintings, please point them out to me and I would be happy to help you include them in wikipedia.
Best Wishes,

The article was created by Evrik, who still occasionally edits here. They are not any kind of staff member - just an experienced editor. 57.140.16.31 (talk) 19:34, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm sorry, but no. First, it is the responsibility of those wanting to retain the article to provide the sources. Secondly, material from your galleries is not independent, and cannot contribute to establishing notability. ColinFine (talk) 19:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have been listed on Wikipedia for 23 years - having first been posted by a member of the Wikipedia staff as proved in the copy of the email I posted to you above. And now the rules are changed? That does not seem right. Please send me an email and I would be happy to email you a color jpg of the Fine Arts Connoisseur article and any other information you wish. Please give me a chance to save my page. Thank you! Scriabin1 (talk) 19:48, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm afraid not. There are no "members of the Wikipedia staff". The article was created by Evrik - an ordinary editor, like you or me - in 2006, when we were much less careful about standards of sourcing. There is no user on Wikipedia or Commons called "Bruce Anderson", but many people choose not to use their real names, and it is strongly frowned on to speculate on the real life identity of users.
Unfortunately, if you hadn't pointed us at the article, it's likely that nobody would have noticed it, like the hundreds of thousands or millions of other seriously substandard articles.
I am trying to save the article about you, by seeking sources. Frankly I am dubious that even if those two contain significant coverage of you, they will be enough to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, but I'm trying. I need to see them before I can add them as sources, though, so if you would email them to me that would be helpful (You can go to my user page User:ColinFine, and you should find "Email this user" as an option in one of the side menus).
If you can find any other independent sources (which, as I say, materials from your galleries are not: they naturally and appropriately have an interest in promoting you, but Wikipedia does not accept such sources), that would help. ColinFine (talk) 20:43, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have deleted the entire collections list and awards list as it would take a huge amount of time to verify each collector. I hope this solves any problems with this site. Thank you so much for your help with this matter! Scriabin1 (talk) 00:20, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm afraid it doesn't. It reduces the amount of unsourced information in the article, which is an improvement; but what remains is still unsourced, and therefore unacceptable. And there remains the question of whether there is enough material available to ground any article on. I've not so far had any replies to my request for the two sources you mentioned. David Ho[edit]

Hi, I edited my personal information on the Wikipedia page about myself. But someone keeps changing the information to outdated information. Please keep my edits permanent please. If you need to verify that I am indeed David Ho, you could check with Columbia University Medical Center, my employer. Daviddaiho (talk) 16:17, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Daviddaiho Please verify your identity by sending an email to info-en@wikimedia.org. Do not send copies of identity documents unless requested. If you send the email from your work email address that should be sufficient.
You should not directly edit the article about you, but you may propose edits on Talk:David Ho in the form of an edit request(click for instructions). It isn't up to others to contact you, you must be here to discuss your edits. 331dot (talk) 16:20, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If, as what Daviddaiho (talk) (and probably Wc2713 (talk)) said in 1182013326, claim as himself David Ho (he said "check with Columbia University Medical Center, my employer"), one wouldn't be so sneaky to use use...abuse Minor Edits that was for spelling error or change url-status to default link to archive webpage from dead main webpage...those minor edits that is not meant for changing the content. These unsourced personal, really personal allegations. Looks like a smear campaign. --- Cat12zu3 (talk) 16:48, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I instinctively feel that there is something wrong with this page, but I don't know what. JackkBrown (talk) 16:29, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You'll have to be clearer about the "something wrong", Jack. (Incidentally, English speakers don't use contractions like "it's" when they're final in a sentence: the is has the stress) ColinFine (talk) 16:43, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@JackkBrown: It has summary information in the lead which is not in the article with appropriate references. See WP:LEAD. The long, rambling list of artists is particularly inappropriate. Bazza (talk) 16:44, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just to look at a single sentence: "The Palladium was designed by architect Arlan W. Johnson [1] and opened as a theatre [2] in 1928 as the Plymouth Theatre. It has a seating capacity [3] of 2,160 in the Main Room and 500 in the upstairs room [4] and is a popular venue [5] for rock and metal bands."
  1. It's safe to assume that the design of a building was by an architect. (If Johnson had instead been a ceramicist or a cooper or a criminologist, this would have been worth pointing out.)
  2. In view of what swiftly follows in the same sentence, "as a theatre" seems redundant.
  3. Strictly speaking these seating capacities may exclude capacities for authorized standing, but the distinction (if there is one) is perhaps pedantic, so "seating" could be cut.
  4. Capitalized "Main Room" contrasts rather oddly with non-capitalized "upstairs room".
  5. "A popular venue" could just be "popular".
Instinctively or otherwise, I feel that there's something wrong with most pages. As there are only so many hours in the day, I normally don't let this worry me. -- Hoary (talk) 23:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

About Jumbo Türkiye[edit]

Hello,

I created a page called Jumbo Türkiye, but it was sent for expedited deletion. A few hours later, the page was completely removed. The authorized person stated that the problem was in the company information box but no detailed explanation was given. Can you help with this? How can we activate the page? Sadic fatih (talk) 22:05, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your account has no edits other than the above, and Jumbo Türkiye and Draft:Jumbo Türkiye have never existed. Was it on this Wikipedia? 331dot (talk) 22:09, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, it was, but I didn't get an answer when I asked there. Sadic fatih (talk) 22:13, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
When you asked... where, exactly? Beeblebrox (talk) 22:21, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
331dot, the message on Sadic fatih's user talk page indicates that they did create an article or a draft, (or a sandbox) which got speedily deleted.
Hello, Sadic Fatih. It sounds as if you have a (very common) misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. An article about a company (or anything else) is a neutral summay of what independent published sources say about the company. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.
I can't see the deleted draft, but by the sound of it it was a promotional piece: that is not permitted on Wikipedia.
If you wish to proceed with this:
  • Clarify your connection with the company. If you are in any way employed or paid, make a formal declaration as explainmed on your user talk page.
    Find sources that are wholly independent of the companmy - not written or published by the company or its staff or associates, and not based on press releases or interviews - and contain significant coverage about the company (not just mentions or routine stock-exchange events).
    If you cannot find any, such sources, give up and do something else. You will not be able to create an article about it.
  • If you can find some sources forget everything that you know about the company and write an article based only on what those independent sources say. This is hard, which is one of the reasons that we strongly advise you not to write about a subject where you have a conflict of interest.
ColinFine (talk) 22:28, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Sadic fatih, I notice that you made a comment about this matter on Turkish Wikipedia. If you created the deleted page there, then English Wikipedia editors cannot help you with it. You must pursue the matter on Turkish Wikipedia. Cullen328 (talk) 22:38, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi! I've added an (I think useful, and adequately cited) table to the section on ridership for Union Pearson Express but my table formatting leaves something to be desired - think this would ideally be right-aligned and inline with text, as opposed to creating a big break in page. Not sure how to achieve this - thank you! Goyston talk, contribs 23:53, 26 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mobile visual editing broken?[edit]

I've noticed some really weird app behavior editing on mobile in the last few hours. Neither visual nor source editing worked properly, I sometimes got "Invalid server response" errors. Submitting translations for website UI[edit]

Is there a proper channel to submit translations for the website's UI? I've been aiding my learning in CHamoru (Chamorro) by reading articles in the language and having my UI set to it. I noticed that, although the coverage is wider than I expected, the UI translations are incomplete. For example, on the left-hand side panel, in the section “Contribute.” Of the six elements (the title being included), there are two which currently lack translation: the header “Contribute,” and the section “Learn to edit.” I think that these could be translated to “Na'guaha” and “Latungo' ritoka,” respectively. Vivian S Zitek (talk) 11:51, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Vivian S Zitek, there is some information at Meta:Meta:Babylon/Translations with a Finding help and support section. TSventon (talk) 13:05, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vivian S Zitek: Most interface messages are part of the MediaWiki software which powers Wikipedia. It's used by thousands of other wikis in various languages and many messages have numerous translated versions. You are very welcome to contribute to that.
It's possible for a MediaWiki installation to add its own interface messages in some places, e.g. the sidebar controlled by MediaWiki:Sidebar. This is the English Wikipedia and we very rarely translate our own local messages to other languages. "Contribute" is made by MediaWiki:Interaction. Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Interaction/ only shows four translations, and that's four more than usual. I was surprised to see so many. "Learn to edit" is made by MediaWiki:Introduction. Special:PrefixIndex/MediaWiki:Introduction/ shows no translations. That's more normal. Our local MediaWiki messages with translations can only be edited by administrators. For a small language like Chamorro, I'm afraid the English Wikipedia is not going to bother with translations even if a volunteer is willing to submit them. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@PrimeHunter Thank you for the detailed response. It's understandable, albeit disappointing, that the language is too small to warrant changing things on the English Wikipedia. I had a suspicion that that might be the case, so I appreciate getting more information about it. Thank you & @TSventon for taking the time to reply!
(As a tangent from this, I very well may just write up a userscript that automatically changes it for me locally. Tampermonkey FTW.) Vivian S Zitek (talk) 21:40, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vivian S Zitek: I found some statistics. I think around 1% of our page views are from logged in users who can change interface language. We have 46,378,064 user accounts. According to Wikipedia:Database reports/User preferences, 8 users had set Chamoru as interface language at the English Wikipedia in 2019. This includes inactive accounts. It doesn't include users who have set Chamoru for all Wikimedia wikis at Special:GlobalPreferences and sometimes view English Wikipedia pages. Most Wikimedia users probably don't know this option. If we made messages in Chamoru, I guess maybe a handful of users would see them. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:08, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Does anyone know about the copyright licenses of YouTube descriptions?[edit]

I found an edit 1 where someone copied the contents of a YouTube description into an article. I've reverted it because that is definitely not a reliable source, but I was wondering if it's worth revdelling? —asparagusus (interaction) sprouts! 12:51, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, I think the person who added the text (User:RCStarter) doesn't know what a reliable source is, or what content is worth inclusion. They've been adding death dates for bands based on unreliable sources for a while. See their contribs. —asparagusus (interaction) sprouts! 12:53, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

For some information about company name.[edit]

i made corrections in many companies Legal name and Trade name (d/b/a), e.g. Swiggy, Rapido, Ola but one user reverted my edits.

Is he did right or wrong? Sayeed2k (talk) 13:13, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Your most recent edit, to Asian Paints, was unhelpful. You added a value for 'former_name' to the infobox, but it had no effect as that parameter is not supported by 'infobox company'. Maproom (talk) 16:22, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Maproom: |former_name= is a supported parameter, per Template:Infobox company#Parameters. GoingBatty (talk) 17:43, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It looks to me as if your edits were not supported by any citation, and furthermore were possibly contrary to the policy in WP:COMMONNAME.
In any case, this is how Wikipedia works: somebody makes an edit, somebody else doesn't agree with the edit and reverts them, and then they have a discussion. That is your next step - open a discussion on the talk page of the article, and ping the editor who reverted. Your aim is not to prove anybody right or wrong, but to reach consensus, according to Wikipedia's policies. See WP:BOLD. ColinFine (talk) 17:25, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Firstly thanks for your reply. But he should read the caption, there are captions written above on every columns (like former name, Name). So i made edit as captions were written. Sayeed2k (talk) 17:52, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Sayeed2k: Don't tell us this. Instead, tell the other editor. Remember that you are trying to reach consensus, not win an argument, so just make your point in a friendly manner. The other guy is not your enemy, and like you is trying to improve Wikipedia. You do not need to involve us or any other third party unless you cannot reach a consensus. -Arch dude (talk) 19:24, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Translations[edit]

I have several translations for my page Occupational Safety and Health literacy. These translations have been done by professionals. It is important that we try and get the OSH literacy information to as many persons as possible. How can I upload these translations, please? Davidmagee9 (talk) 16:46, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Davidmagee9 firstly, it is not "your page" but an article that anyone can edit. You have no ownership and it's important to understand that.
If you want to add translations of this article onto other language Wikipedias, you'll need to go to the specific language Wikipedia (for example, fr.wikipedia.org) and create a new article there. You will have to follow their new article processes. Note that every language project is different and may have different policies and guidelines.
Once you have created the article on the other Wikipedia, you can add an interlanguage link. Instructions for doing so are here: Wikipedia:Translate us Qcne (talk) 17:11, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hmm, Davidmagee9, there is an interesting point here: if those translations were done by professionals, then (according to the rules of English Wikipedia) I believe they would be classed as WP:paid editors, and (if they were contributing to en-wiki) would have to make a formal declaration. The rules of other language Wikipedias might be different, but I doubt it: I believe that one is Wikimedia Foundation policy.
I'm guessing, however, that they will not be submitting their translations to the other Wikipedia, but you will be doing it, in which case they are not editing Wikipedia, and do not have to make a declaration. But I must ask: what is your position? Are you in any way paid to create these articles (including, employed to work on the subject even if not specifically on a Wikipedia article)? If so, you are a paid editor, and must make the formal declaration on your user page in en-wiki, and (I think) any other language Wikipedia you introduce the material to. --ColinFine (talk) 17:36, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Davidmagee9: The translator of a work owns the copyright in the resulting "derived work". Yes, since the original was licensed CC-BY-SA, the translator is obliged to license the translation CC-BY-SA also, but technically, you cannot do this in the translator's behalf. Please make sure that the translator explicitly marks the translation as CC-BY-SA before you (or the translator) uses this tranlation anywhere, including any Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 19:17, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Davidmagee9: You say "It is important that we try and get the OSH literacy information to as many persons as possible." To whom is this important? It's no more important to Wikipedia than any other bit of information. If it's "important" to you, you probably have a WP:COI and you should declare it. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not an advocacy forum. See WP:NOT. -Arch dude (talk) 19:31, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to edit wiki?[edit]

[user| fooddoz.com] How can you create a wiki page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Food23 (talkcontribs) 19:41, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Food23, please see the answers to this question today at the Teahouse, which is the same as your question. ColinFine (talk) 20:24, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
But I will add that the chances of an article about http://www.fooddoz.com are remote. Wikipedia is only interested in what independent reliable sources say about a subject, so unless your blog (I'm guessing it's yours? Apologies if I'm wrong) has been the subject of articles in major newspapers or websites with a reputation for editorial control, there is literally nothing that can go into an article about it.
If I'm right, and it is your blog, you should also be aware of the advice on editing with a conflict of interest. ColinFine (talk) 20:27, 27 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Guidance on an Article for Deletion[edit]

As a new editor I was asked to review '1986 Lewisham London Borough Council election'.

The 'This article has multiple issues.' dates back to July 2019 and June 2021. I agreed with those comments and proposed that the article should be deleted.

The editor who removed that proposal seems to be the author of the incomplete information from May 2010.

I do not understand the reason given for keeping the article: "not prodable".

As the editor responded promptly, I consider that they would have been aware of the 'multiple issues' concerns. Does the other editor have a COI by being the author?

Please can someone else consider this matter. I only came to this article because it was one that needed consideration. BlueWren0123 (talk) 01:22, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

 Courtesy link: 1986 Lewisham London Borough Council election ayakanaa ( t · c ) 01:57, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BlueWren0123: per WP:PROD article creators may object to the proposal and remove the PROD. I suggest that since you are a new user, you work on improving articles rather than proposing deletions. RudolfRed (talk) 02:01, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes I know that I have a lot to learn. Please can you help me to understand "not prodable" as by understanding the reasons given, I can improve. BlueWren0123 (talk) 02:20, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It may be that I have come to the wrong place, I will follow the recommendation at the to of the page and direct my question elsewhere. Is it possible that when you read "new editor" you did not consider the remainder? BlueWren0123 (talk) 02:37, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BlueWren0123 See WP:DEPROD. The author is allowed to remove the template. If you believe the user has a connection to the subject, that is a separate issue. What the editor meant by "not prodable" is that it does not fulfill WP:DEL-REASON. Hopefully this helps. ayakanaa ( t · c ) 02:53, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BlueWren0123: Thanks for trying to help. "PROD" is strictly for non-controversial, completely uncontested deletions. Anyone can contest a PROD simply by removing the PROD template: that indicates that at least one editor disagrees with the deletion, so it is no longer eligible for this particular deletion process. If you still think the article should be deleted, you must use the more formal AfD process instead (WP:AFD) where discussion will occur. In this case the editor who objected believes that the article is part of a set of articles that must be considered as a whole. As a new user, I would avoid this sort of complex mess, but if you are interested in the process, please start reading the AfD discussions for a little while, and then start participating in some of them. After that, you will have a better feel for which articles need to be deleted. Please do not be discouraged. -Arch dude (talk) 02:55, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
BlueWren0123, you've been given some excellent advice. As an addition, the reasons you gave for deletion were "Not Notable & Incomplete data"; but whereas lack of notability is a reason for deletion, incompleteness (or even the impossibility of completion) is not. Please read and digest the (valid) reasons for deletion. And as for the subject, I should warn you that, in my experience, even pretty vapid articles about local elections have vigorous defenders: If I'd known how much of my time this AfD would consume, I wouldn't have launched it. -- Hoary (talk) 03:12, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thankyou ayakanaa, Arch dude and Hoary, I had started to look at the reasons for deletion, where I found a non exclusive list of 14 reasons. When a recommendation to improve an article had not produced an improvement after 4 years and 2 years, I was surprised to find that there was such a prompt response to maintain the status quo.
I do not believe that I have gained any knowledge (or even useful information) beyond that an election took place there in that year by reading it. I had not expected that this would be controversial and contested. I will leave it alone. No AfD from me on this.
I did understand that this was one of many elections at that time. Is this one in any way notable?
I saw that there is a method for removing articles from the list to be reviewed. Would it be helpful to do that, so that another editor does not get into trouble as I have?
And I have extended my vocabulary. Thank you.
(I notice that there has been input from other editors while I have been writing this. I hope that I do not cut across their comments - I have just been a bit slow doing this) BlueWren0123 (talk) 03:52, 28 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
